when friends and family speak to me they almost never say my name. Instead of addressing me with my name or even Ms., Mam, etc, they just dont address me and continue with their conversation.

If you are the only person there, they are obviously talking to you and saying your name is superfluous. If there are several people there and they address their remarks to you only that would leave out everyone else which could be thought of as rude by the others.

Actually it is probably a habit that they have learned from others. Some people do it and some people don't. I have a relative who constantly says my name while they are talking to me and it really irritates me.

To be frank with you, I personally feel that by calling a person's name often while conversing, makes it more formal than personal.I feel that friends are to be accepted as friends and not in thei names. Even with my brother and sister I dont use much of their names but uses them when I am a little cross or unhappy with them!!!

Good question. I'm not usually addressed by name, come to think about it. Except in passing e.g. when someone say "hello J......" Listen & see how many times you hear others addressed by name; I bet it won't be often.

It is very common. People just don't like mentioning other people's names too much. Let them be and do the same to them.

Well Ms. Six, I totally agree. It's not proper etiquette.
