These girdles were more of a necessity, as panty hose weren't around quite yet. So, nylons were the short version, and the girdles had the hook-ups. Further, women weren't wearing pants as often (50's, early 60's). As far as the gender, the lowering of the bar, and the "general slovenly look" you're stating...EVERYTHING has changed for both genders. Jeans and sweats were not wore by either gender, unless men worked outside. Shirts without collars were not popular, either. So...it's not a gender thing, with woman lowering the bar. Society has changed and what has been marketed to society has changed.

Just look around in public at women in the present, their posture is horrible, their clothes do not fit right, they are starting to get lower back pains, and a mid drift bulge. This is all caused because of the negative effect of gravity on our internal organs and muscles on our bodies, and commons sense solution is wearing a decent girdle, not SPANX. Find a professional corsetiere for a fitting and some helpful consulting and you will completely amazed as to the positive effect a girdle will have on you.

Girdles look lovely on a woman, my partner wears them all the time and doesn't know what all the fuss is about not wearing them. And she prefers to wear them to hold up her stockings rather them wear tights that she says are unhygienic and can even smell bad.

lol well my mother said they smelled bad for one thing..
maybe because they thought men don't wear them and let their rolls of fat in a generally slovenly look so why can't we
i personally don't dress like a male, nor do i want to, i care about how i look but i do that for me, not for any of the rest of the world..call it personal pride in my own feminity..but i ain't wearing no girdle..lol..don't need one either :oP

i thought the reason girdles went out of fashion was because chicks started to starve themselves and therefore didn't need those things to hide their fat
