how do you turn off the auto-corrections on Microsoft Word? i still need/want it to underline the words i spell wrong. i am using a lot of foreign words in a paper & it keeps changing them to other words. is there any way to just turn off the auto-corrections? i played around, but couldn't figure it out!

any help would be much appreciated!

(don't laugh, but i don't know if this matters-- i have windows xp & i do all the updates... hehe)

The AutoCorrect Options button first appears as a small, blue box when you rest the mouse pointer near text that was automatically corrected, and it changes to a button icon when you point to it. If you find on occasion that you don't want text to be corrected, you can undo a correction or turn AutoCorrect options on or off by clicking the button and making a selection.

Or,

On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options. Click Exceptions.
Do one or more of the following to prevent AutoCorrect from:

● Capitalizing a word you type after a specific abbreviation

● Click the First Letter tab, and then type the abbreviation (including the period) in the Don't capitalize after box.

● Correcting a word that contains mixed uppercase and lowercase letters

I understand your problem. Tools, Auto Correct Options - or Options, Auto Correct, depending on the version of Word, will turn most of these off. Your reaction is a common one from people who think "Oh ... Word Processor ... simple to use out of the box. No training needed!" I have been involved in software support and training for 20 years and I am so familiar with this attitude! Actually, it is possible to use Word well from scratch but getting frustrated with it because it is not 'working the way you expect it to work' is the one biggest block to learning anything. Stop swearing at it and understand that there is a learning curve. It is not a particularly steep one but getting frustrated because it is slowing you down is your worst hindrance! If you are going to be using Word a lot, take some time to do a basic course in it. It is one of those applications which looks deceptively simple but is, in fact, very powerful. Just remember that the shortcuts and automatic formatting things that you find annoying are there to make a trained user more productive, not less. It's a bad workman who blames his tools!

Go to the menu bar -> Tools -> Autocorrect Options -> and then you can untick the options such as 'replace test as you type' and make furthur options or just turn it off.
