It lets more ultraviolet light from the Sun reach the surface of the Earth, and UV light is damaging.

When talking about ozone, we need to discuss skin cancer. Why? Because ozone is what helps block radiation from the sun. You may know that radiation gives us skin cancer, but many people do not know the process. It is simple...

Radiation actually changes the DNA structrure in our skin cells. Most of the time, the changed DNA sequence cannot support life, and will simply die. That is why our skin peels after getting a bad sunburn. When the DNA sequence changes to some configuration that can support life, it turns into cancer.

A little about the stratosphere...Since there was a huge hole in the ozone, and we decided to stop letting the bad chemicals into the air, do you know what the plan is to fill the hole back up? Amazingly, the sun's radiation charges air particules and turns O2 into O3 (O3 is the chemical formula for ozone). It is a natural process.

Hello there arrowhead! I'll just answer your question very shortly ok? Because if I explain it to you one by one it'll take a long time. Chromosomes are made up of cell which is our basic unit of life. And ozone layer as we know it, it protects the Earth right? The ozone layers protects us from the UV rays or the ultraviolet rays that come from the sun's rays which can damage the Earth. That's why we should protect our ozone layer by not using e.g., hairspray because it contains a substance that destroys it. Also don't burn styrofoams ok? It's also one of the reason why our ozone layer is getting smaller and smaller.

More UV rays can reach the ground where you and I live and work. But I think there are other things that penetrate our atmosphere that damage chromosomes. I think these are high speed x-rays from exploding stars. Ozone or not, they get through. Good question for being random!

Ozone is a key absorber for UV radiation below 340 nm.
One of the bases of DNA, thymine dimerizes with absorption of UV radiation near 265 nm. The presence of thymine dimers interferes with DNA replication, so that substitutional errors are caused.

Note that mercury vapour lights produce radiation at 254 nm which is widely used for sterilization. A dose of 1E-2 J/cm^2 is sufficient to kill most cells.

It lets more UV down to you, which can actually break bonds in your DNA.
