Your dad is absolutely right. The commute from Oakland to San Jose is absolutely treacherous. If you are a new driver there is no way you should be making that drive during the daytime. I go into San Jose very early in the morning (4am) to avoid the main portion of the traffic and come out about 11am when the traffic lulls. I see many accidents. The best would be to use public transport until you have a couple years experience under your belt.

Take the TRAIN--it stops in Oakland & goes straight to San Jose

there are also direct commuter buses that you can get from Oakland to San Jose

and either of these beat the hecht out of driving

I stopped driving from San Francisco to Sunnyvale because of the traffic and the way people drive. It is so easy to get into an accident especially when someone changes lanes without looking. Or to get stuck in traffic longer because of an accident.

I thought Bart WENT to San Jose, or is that coming soon? Isn't there a connection from Bart to San Jose light rail?

Call up Bart, they will find a solution for you, they have people there all day doing nothing but sitting on their fat as$es waiting for a call like yours.

Bart to San Francisco, muni to the Caltrain Depot, then Caltrain to San Jose will probably work (I'm not sure if Caltrain goes to San Jose).
