What are some good, moderately priced, medium to small sized SUVs? I don't want a huge Escalade or anything of that caliber. I want a 6 cylinder if possible. Any suggestions?

the answer lies within your question: the "caliber." It is the new crossover from dodge. It is about the size of a small suv. They are very well priced. They are also available in all-wheel drive if that is important to you. PS: if you need some real power, wait a few months for the SRT version, it has a turbo 4 cyl. that makes 300 horsepower plus it looks a little better.

The Jeep Liberty is an excellent version that you might consider. It turns very sharp for ease of parking and has a very sophisticated four wheel drive system if you should ever need it. A friend has one and one snowy night we were late coming back from northern wisconsin in a snow storm. The snow drifts were so high the headlights would be covered for a second but that Jeep pushed right through that snow.
His 2002 now has 80,000 miles on it and has never needed to go back to the dealer.
Good Luck

SUV's are good cars, and yes they are especially good because they are spacy and stylish, unlike minivans. But if you are going to get an SUV then get one that is not american made, and i am not saying this because i hate american cars or anything (i drive a mustang), but japanese or german made suv's are more reliable, safe, and fuel efficient. If you want a spacious 6-cylinder moderately priced SUV, then go for a Honda Pilot, it is truly worth your money, but if you can spend more then go for the Lexus RX300 or RX400h, it is a very nice SUV, good fuel efficiency, and its also a status symbol.

How about a Dodge Magnum? They come with a V-6 and can give more space than a car but is smaller than an SUV.

get a land cruiser 100 series believe me its good, suspension durability, resale value and maintenance but its a v 8, but if you look closely there a very slim differerence on gas consumption compared to v 6

I don't have a good suggestion, but I will tell you to avoid Chrysler Pacificas. I was in a roll-over accident and I made it out without so much as a scratch, but none of the 6 air bags deployed.
