We are watching my Mother in-laws dog who is staying with us for 10 days and we are fed up with the urinating, couch chewing, shoe distorting and ripping up pillows. Wally is a little Cairin about 30 lbs, our dog is a Rhodesian ridgeback 83 lbs. Wally, the little dog is commonly urinating next to the dog dish and in our bedroom. We have also caught Wally trying to mount our dog when she is lying down. My assumption is wall is trying to be the Alfa dog but I feel our dog does not take Wally seriously. I have never, NEVER caught Wally in the so called marking act so this is tough!

Key notes:
They both eat at the same time.
Since Wally is so small, when I open the door they can exit at the same time, and they do.
Wally is around three or four years of age and our dog is seven.

I am I right in assuming that Wally is trying to be the Alfa dog and is marking? Since I can not catch him what can I do? Is there a way to stop this as well as all the destructive behavior?

Mike

Start by feeding your dog first, making Wally wait to eat till after. Attempt to make him wait to go out the door till after your dog. Do be careful doing this that if your dog decides to assert herself, Wally isn't hurt. You may just have to crate him and tough it out for the next few days.

Well to stop him from marking or should I say to prevent the urine from getting on your carpet and furniture...get a wrap around doggie diaper. You only have him for 10 days so this will atleast keep it from damaging your house. They use these diapers for doggie bladder problems and marking w/stud dogs. This should save on some of the annoyance. Ooops..that the little bugger was male..anyways..same advice again..they have a diaper for the femmes as well they use for when they are in heat. Local pet stores carry these. Good luck.

I think your solution may be to only allow one dog at a time to be loose in the house while the other remains crated. This little guy is trying to bully all of you (not just your dog). I hope the Cairin is crate trained.

She seems too excited and is being territorial. Also she's in a new environment, you may need to house-train her, i.e. crate her and only let her out to play if she does her business. you may need to spend more time around the dogs to correct her right when she misbehaves. Feed her after you eat and fed your only dog. Tell her to wait until you agree to let her approach her food. But I hear ya, it's hard to dog sit someone else's dog.

Little dogs don't know they're little. More so for any kind of terrier. That's their personality. Must be funny to see such a size difference yet the little dog is trying to be top dog. But it would be worse if they were both males.

the urinating on various items does not have to do with "alpha/subordinate". it is just a dog thing. The Carin is not neutered huh?

i feel the same way but you know what, maybe your just tripping and thinking that these dogs really think about what your thinking twice about. why don't you just watch them for like a day, but the whole day, and after that, don't trip about it anymore
