It all depends on the religion. Episcopalians are high on the IQ charts, while Pentecostals are at the bottom. I've met both smart and dumb atheists, just as I've met smart and dumb Christians. Now, if we're talking SATs, the Unitarians blow everyone else out of the water. However, there is a correlation between a good education in science and becoming an atheist. So yeah, the brightest among science students are going to kill the curve.

Firstly where is your data and evidence? Name sources of your statistic. Secondly the "IQ" score is NOT a reliable indicator and has been considered out of date and only a general guide for years now. I took a 3 hour test, got 155 on the Cattell scale and can tell you I ain't as smart as Einstein or a one in 3000 for sure :-).
Beliefs are not intellect biased, only the rationalisations/arguements for their beliefs alter with increased apparent IQ. You can be a genius in maths, sciences, music or a bunch of things and still genuinely believe in some weird conspiracy or spiritual system.

That's a good question, becuase, is there even such a thing as an atheist? For example: if you asked an atheist about the existance of God, what would you logically expect them to say? Something along the lines of, "There is no God", right? However, that would be known as an absolute statement. To make one, and be 100% confident in the validity of it, one must know everything about everything about the subject matter. In order to further explain: if one was to say that "There is no gold in Europe", then that one would have to know everything about everything that had to do with the subject matter. In other words, that one must look under every rock, know what was inside of every clump of dirt, know that nobody had a gold tooth or piercing, no one had any gold jewelry, ect. That person would have to essentially be everywhere at the same time in Europe in order to confidently say, "There is no gold in Europe"! However: if I were to say, "There is gold in Europe", then I would only have to know that there was just a small piece of gold somewhere in Europe. I would only have to have a little piece of evidence, and know only a little bit about the gold in Europe to be 100% confident about my stance. Let's take this further and apply it to atheists. If an atheist were to say, "There is no God", then that atheist would have to know everything about everything that had to do with God! That atheist would have to have more than a high IQ, that atheist would have to essentially be omniscient! That atheist would have to look everywhere in the earth, in the universe, ect. Can any atheist travel the extent of the universe? No! Is any atheist omniscient? Not if they don't know EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING! So can they really make that statement and be 100% confident about it? If they could not, and had to say, "I don't know if there is a God", then they would be label agnostic! If they said, "I don't believe in God", well, guess what? What one believes doesn't matter unless they believe in the truth! It doesn't matter if I believe that I can fly unassisted. What happens when I jump of the 10-story building? Now, to say, "There IS a God", I only have to have a little piece of proof! And that, I can say alongside so many other Christians, is my life! I can say, "Look at my life, and how its been changed!" It's not what I've done, but what only God could have ever done! That is my little piece of proof--my testimony. Who can deny that? There is also creation, and so many other things! So, as to why are people with extraordinary IQ's atheists, perhaps they are trying to simply disguise the Truth with fallacy. I hope this helps, God bless!
1 Samuel 2:2 NIV
"There is no one holy like the LORD; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.

That's a generalization. Not all people with high IQs are atheists, but the tendency is that the higher the IQ, the higher the likelihood of atheism.
Reason? Well in my own opinion as an atheist, the person with the higher IQ is more likely to understand complex science, and is more likely to have higher education. Those are two main things that lead to atheism.

Because most of these specially gifted and intelligent people are in the science fields. Foremost of these are the scientists. They refuse to accept the fact that religion and science can co-exist. Moreover, somehow they can not accept truths not backed by scientific facts.
They do not realize or refuse to accept the fact that if it wasn't for divine intervention; most if not all scientific discoveries wouldn't have come to realization.
These same people with extraordinary high IQ's tend to be eccentric and generally have mental problems or disorders. They are sometimes called freaks of nature.
They refuse to accept the fact that God is responsible for their very existence. Their ego sometimes encompasses any comprehension of God.

It seems like they have a lot of knowledge, but are there any stats or polls that have been done to prove for a fact that an extraordinarily high IQ is usually an atheistic trait?
If that's true....I'd like to read the results of the survey that brought us to this conclusion.

I think it's hilarious when people find it necessary to tell you how high their IQ is. As if it somehow means what they have to say is more important. And nevermind that most of the people on here who do it, are the most senseless morons I've come across. Which leads me to two conclusions: They're lying. Or the IQ test isn't a very good measure of intelligence.

Einstein wasn't an athiest. There are many many people of faith who are also very scientifically minded and very intelligent. I think atheists tend to focus on their IQ to reaffirm their value as human beings, so if a person has a high IQ AND is an atheist...they will be the first ones to make sure YOU know how smart they are.

Hm mm.
Do you actually have data to back up such a statement?
I'm an atheist and I'm skeptical; there are probably a good number of theists and others out here with me who will be just as skeptical.
It might be better if you would give us the benefit of your source material whenever you post a question that so firmly declares something as questionable as this statement appears to be.
