Four gifts, eg book, dvd, cd and small radio. Then to each object attach gift voucher for $20, maybe with comment like "hey, grandpaps or,... all my teenage friends call you "old-80-year man",... you no longer drink, curse, smoke or chase girls. That's the bad news! The good news, "Santa Claus", is that here (talking of which, can you still hear?) are four gifts, to make you feel (...can you still feel warm in August?) that you could be such a loose-living 20 year-old again, and four times BETTER than my pimpled-faced school friends and four times over (...life nearly over?). If things get too exciting, or out of hand, simply add up (...can you still add?) those vouchers to know you how old you really are (...still know WHO you are?). A red outfit, sleigh and several reindeer coming (...still coming FROM places, never going anywhere?) your way - as gifts - next Christmas. In the meantime, put on weight (...impatient with others and yet always telling others to wait for you?), grow a white beard, sing Christmas carols and tell everyone (...blabbering to all and sundry?) you have a lot of new friends, and they are all called elves. Ho ho, ho ho!"

We just gave my grandparents a collage of photos from all their years. Maybe your grandfather would like that. Take some pictures from the past and present and put them all together. They love to talk about old times. Spend the afternoon looking at the photos and talking about things that happened around the time each photot was taken. My grandparents had a great time telling us all stories. ( you know like when they could go to the movies for 10 cents.) Good luck

All he really wants and needs is a nice card and time with you. He loves you. You don't spend enough time with him throughout the rest of the year. Don't think the gift will count if you don't spend time with him. He know's time is not on his side. He loves you. I cared for my dad until he was 90. I know what counts. It's not a box of candy or sweater he'll never wear. You can't buy love or showing you care.

I bought my grampa(82) a CD player and some CD's from when he would have been a teenager(1940's). He enjoyed listening to the tunes and telling stories. It was cool. Make sure the CD player is really simple to operate. If you go to a high quality music store they should have music categorized by certain time frames.

My mother-in-law is 85...in the last couple of years we've bought her:
a prepaid cell phone (tracfone, which we renew once a year - 300 to 600 minutes)
a medical alert service and equipment (like Lifeline) also renewed once a year
headphones for watching TV called "TV Ears" (she's hard of hearing)

Give him a card and your school picture. Spend some time with him on his birthday too. No gift can substitute the time you spend with him.

I think a picture of you and him or with the family would be a great gift. Get a really nice frame... or make one yourself. You can also make him a great card with a poem or something. : }

Maybe a gift certificate to a resturant and an invitation for the two of you to share a meal. Get to know him before it is to late. Why do you not know him well?

I agree, go for a photo of the two of you together. That's what I do for my grandparents and they love it. They tell me that when they are missing me (or my kids) all they have to do it look at the pictures and life is better.
