Siddhartha Gautama was born a prince in a kingdom around what is now the border area between India and Nepal. At the age of 29, desiring to know the path that lead to the ending of all impermanence and anguish, to ensuring his permanent well-being, he renounced everything of the world, becoming a homeless ascetic, vowing to find the way to True Ultimate Reality.

He was a Bohdisattva, which is one who goes through an intense period of development and practice in order to attain the realization of Perfect Wisdom, Total Supreme Enlightenment, Buddhahood.

At the age of 35, by way of total focus of his entire being on this single goal, he accomplished his purpose and attained the realization of Perfect Wisdom. He found the answer that lead to the complete cessation of all impermanence and anguish, that lead to reaching the other shore that is Permanent True Reality – Nirvana. He then began to teach, instruct and guide others who similarly were seeking Wisdom and Enlightenment. It is the teaching of The Buddha that is the foundation of Buddhism.

Around 2600 years back came Mahavira and 77 years later followed Gautama Buddha. Mahavira and Gautama Buddha were in a manner both contemporaries.

Buddhism is a religion. And any religion is never founded. Whenever one gains enlightenment and imparts it back to the community... because of the faith in their leader a following develops. This following ultimately culminates into a religion.

The followers of Gautama Buddha are known as Buddhists and the religion Buddhism. Gautama Buddha gained enlightenment at a very late stage of life. He lived amongst the community to gain wisdom but did not succeed. He went far into the dense forests (jungles) but wisdom was not to favor him.

Finally when he was nearing 80 years of age... enlightenment finally swooped on him. Gautama Buddha had become so much frustrated with life that the Buddhist teachings are also called as the middle path. Neither remaining within the community not venturing deep into the dense forests can one gain enlightenment! Siddhartha Gautama finally advised the community to take the middle path.

The teachings of Gautama Buddha are endowed with compassion. During the times of Gautama Buddha... killing animals and consuming them for food was a daily affair. Sacrificing animals in the name of God was also a predominant practice. Gautama Buddha shunned both. Gautama Buddha preached compassion with great fervor.

According to Buddha... every living being had the right to live. Sacrificing the animals in the name of God according to Gautama Buddha was not a good practice. He emphasized on the community to show compassion towards those living beings which were not as privileged as human beings.

Slowly the truth dawned upon the community... the masses and they abhorred killing of the animals ruthlessly. Many became followers of the doctrine preached by Gautama Buddha. Slowly the Buddhism religion spread world over. More here- http://www.godrealized.org/
