My dog just recently got diagnosed with heartworms, they're not severe, but he has them. The treatment they propose keeps him away for 7 days and costs $600. Any solutions that require less away time or less expence????

There is no other treatment for heartworms, unless you just wait and *hope* that the worms die on their own before they kill your dog. (Adult heartworms can live up to 5 years each....and there's no way to know how many, or the ages, of each of your dog's heartworms.)

Most of us only keep them 2-3 days, however. He will have to be very strictly confined (crated) at home for another 4-5 weeks, or he could develop fatal complications during that time. The cost you were quoted is average across the country, but it can vary depending on what degree of a workup your particular dog needs prior to treatment.

Shame he wasn't on heartworm preventative....it would have been MUCH cheaper for you, and MUCH less risky for your dog.

I give my dogs a monthly preventative medicine called Revolution which controls fleas, ticks, heartworm, ear mites & mange. It costs about $10/mo. per dog.
