I have left my cat for a week, but I had a friend come over to pet him. Cat's are very independent. If you turn a full dry cat food bag over on it's side and put out a few of those continuous watering dishes they'll do pretty good. They get lonely though. So it is best if someone can go by and "check on them" and pet them some.

Actually, fish will be okay. I am not talking about fish crammed into a bowl with no filtration but a nice filtered aquarium. Healthy fish can easily go for a week without food in this situation. That being said, there is some risk of leaving an aquarium for that long. If the pump or heater fails and you are not there to fix the problem you might come home to dead fish.
Now, you put this question in the "birds" section so I have to tell you that NO pet bird should be left alone for more than 24-36 hours without someone coming in to check on them and make sure there is clean food and water, the cage is clean, and that there are no injuries (such as getting stuck in a toy part), etc.

Several of the reptiles can survive for weeks without attention if needed. Snakes are a prime example, as long as there is water in the bowl, the humidity and temp. are kept within tolerances, you feed them once a month, pick up the castings about 2 weeks later. (sometimes feed 2 to 3 weeks if they are actively growing).
Also, a pair of cats, with an automatic water dish and feeder can on occasion for a week, but they are animals that enjoy more contact than reptiles. And large amounts of alone time do not help keep a cats emotional state in a good place.

I would not suggest leaving ANY pet home for a week without care. If you will be gone you need to hire a pet sitter to come in and feed and take care of your pet, or get a friend, coworker, or family member to check on them. If you don't have time for a pet and are gone a lot then you should probably not be a pet owner.

It is possible to fully automate *established* aquariums. I got 'stuck' with a traveling job and my three tanks are all setup with auto-feeders and computer UPS power systems to handle power failures along with timers for the lights.
But if you are going to start an aquarium you need to keep in mind that for the first two months or so the tank will need almost daily care! Also, the auto-feeders are all tricky to get set 'just right' to avoid under or over feeding.
Since you put this in the bird section I suppose I should risk flaming and tell you that my Zebra Finches travel with me!

you probably shouldn't have a pet. They require attention, especially birds, which you put this question into.
Fish may be able to survive your schedule, but you have to put a timer on them for light & have someone feed them every day.
Maybe a stuffed animal would be your best bet!

Why would you want a pet if you cant take care of it? Thats absolutly terrible! You get a pet to love and take care of. Not to abandon. You have issues if you think you can get a pet and leave it at home by itself for a week.

Cats can do it. Leave out plenty of water and dry food of course. It's not nice for them if they're the only cat in the house, cuz they're social critters, but they'll survive.

You can try some turtle doves...Or Diamond doves, is the same.
They need to be a pair...and they need you a lot.
They also need a lot of fresh water, changed every day...
If you can, you can leave them a special recipient with a lot of cold water (not frozen)..
Anyway, they are special birds, not very smart, but they get very attached by their owner.
After a few years, if you have them in the room where you sleep, you will see that they will not sing in the morning, until you wake up.
And, also, they need a big cage.
