The risk is minimal, unless you treat in unproperly and it becomes infected. When Mine was done I used Glyocide for two weeks 3 times a day . After those two weeks were up I was able to change the bar and everything. If not use, alchohol free mouthwash or also. The first couple of days are bad, but not terrible, I could only choke down applesauce, and shakes. You have to eat ones from mcdonalds so enough calories get to your bloodstream. Make sure its pierced far enough back because when It is too close it runs the risk of pulling through. Good Luck!

The main thing is that the piercer could slip and hit a nerve causing some really horrible things to happen to you but it's like a one in a million chance of that happening. With that said, I have had my tongue pierced for 10 years now and I've even had it stretched to a larger ring. I have learned to get a shorter post which is 1/2 inch long and that keeps me from getting it caught in my teeth. Also get a pastic post and balls and they will save your teeth. You never know what you do with your teeth at night and I metal one could cause some dental problems. The pain of actually getting it pierced is nothing, it doesn't even really hurt. they put this clamp on there and that hurts more than the needle. The healing time is about 2 weeks with the pain going away at around 6 or 7 days. Regular gold listerine will be your friend for the first 2 weeks while it's healing.

I work in an Ear, Nose & Throat doctor's office, and I can tell you quite a bit about the health risks involved in tongue piercings.

First of all - it opens the way for multiple infections - the worst of which is strep, which then spreads to your throat. It is especially hard to get rid of strep in the tongue area.

Second - I have seen two people come in to the doctor's office to have their tongue sutured back - because the piercing got stuck and ripped through. UGH - it was horrible.

My suggestion is to pierce anything else, but not the tongue - there are too many risks.

The health risks are considerable without even considering infection related problems. The biggest risk is heart attack & potential death. But there seems to be an abundance of people with them.
You'll have to sign a waiver releasing the shop from all responsibility. For me the risk factor & the pain isn't worth the risk or the aggravation

It looks dumb first off, my fiance wants one and I won't allow it. I said if he gets it, there is the door, he won't get one now.

First off it ruins your teeth. If done wrong you can lose ALL since of taste, if not cared for properly the same can happen. You mouth is VERY dirty so your tongue will need to be cleaned FREQUENTLY. My co worker had to go every hour to the bathroom to clean, her tongue also swelled up so it was hard to drink anything and especially hard to eat anything. She was eating soft foods for almost a month. It isn't worth the trouble you are put though!

they can become infected and really do damage. a girl in my area was in the news paper because her tongue piercing got infected (think of all the bacteria in your mouth) and the infection went to her brain and she had to have a part of her brain removed. I found that rather disturbing. and they are bad for your teeth. you can chip teeth with a tongue ring and if you keep pushing it around and against your teeth you can cause them to start to shift. I would really think about how important a tongue ring really is to you. my brother got one and took it out after less then a year.

Make sure that you know who is doing it and talk to the people they've pierced. It hurts but it's not horrible. The worst part is the swelling afterwards. Just make sure you rince your mouth out with Listerine after you eat, drink, or smoke. Chew on ice chips and put a B.C. powder on it. That'll numb it!!! I got mine done a year ago and I'm not dead yet!!! Lol!!

Dangerous, stupid, ugly. Really, don't mess with it.

Messes up your teeth, major threat of infection, the people you're trying to impress will be out of your life in a few years. Forget about it.

about tounge piercing is that when you are eatting it will chip the tip of your teeth and over a period of time it will be very costly to repair them.
