Here is the best advice I could ever give. You spent how much on your computer, car, house, whatever....what did you spend on your body the last 1, 2, 3 years? It is in your best interest to get trainer, talk to a dietician, your doctor and make something happen so you feel great, look great, and live great. It isn't about the investment...it is about the reward.

Don't believe the hype, it is just hype.

That depends on why you are 30lbs overweight. Do you overeat? Do you eat healthy amounts, but perhaps the wrong foods? Do you just need to be in better shape? Do you have other health problems that are contributing to being overweight?

You're not going to find the right method that will work for you unless you can pin down the cause.

In general, you don't need a trendy diet. Eating healthy food, in healthy portions and getting regular exercise will get your weight down, and maintain the healthy weight once you hit your ideal.

FWIW, The BMI is not always accurate if you are using the online calculator especially. It doesn't take your build into account, for one!

I need to be at least 15lbs "overweight" to look healthy, while my sister is so tiny she's healthy at about 10-15 "under" what the BMI traditionally says.

The BMI should be outlawed. For starters, if you are an athlete, you'll always appear to be overweight (ie, Barry Sanders, Lance Armstrong, Dubya, etc).

Having said that, if you wish to lose body fat, you need to change your lifestyle. You need to eat so that you take in fewer calories, and then burn more off with exercise. I'd suggest going to Weight Watcher to learn how to eat right, then taking a class or two at the Y in some activity that seems fun to you.

Expect to lose 1-2 pounds a week, but if you go nuts of the exercise, you will gain muscle weight (which is very healthy).

I'm about 20 lbs overweight and I go to Curves to get into shape.

Exercise really works, not all the yo-yo dieting.

first thing is to decrease your caloric intake. consume as little sugary food as possible. replace "bad" food with "good" food. No white breads, food with lots of starch, etc. eat more veggies and grains...and lean meat and fish. also try to research correct portion sizes. you will be surprised how big american portions are. be sure to get plenty of sleep and exercise. take up distance running...the pounds will melt off! don't forget to do light weight lifting too to tone up.

I love the south beach diet and it works GREAT. The food is not limited and it teaches you to eat sensibly.
