I just went in today and had my colposcopy. He told me the cells from my pap test were precancerous. Doc also told me the best scenario is he will only have to freeze off the cells. He also mentioned an outpatient surgery. What can this surgery be. I am only 17, have a 9 month old baby, and about to get married. I have so much going on and i am extremely worried.

Cervical cryosurgery or cryotherapy is a gynecological treatment that freezes a section of the cervix. Cryosurgery of the cervix is most often done to destroy abnormal cervical cells that show changes that may lead to cancer. These changes are called precancerous cells. Your gynecologist will probably use the term cervical dysplasia.
Cryosurgery is done only after a colposcopy confirms the presence of abnormal cervical cells. Cyrotherapy is also used for the treatment of cervicitis or inflammation of the cervix. Cryosurgery is not a treatment for cervical cancer.

Calm down.....I know how you feel.....The only surgery I've had is a LEEP after a copo. That's laser surgery. If this is the case, your doctor will numb your cervix, then laser off the bad cells. It can be painful after wards, cramping and bleeding but you do go home as soon as the doctor is done. Ask if he can prescribed something for pain before you leave. I had this surgery when I was 18 and had another 3 yrs later. Try not to worry. Even after the surgery, you should get paps at least every 6 mths until everything is normal. This is something you'll have to deal with for the rest of your life unfortunately. Remember, you're not alone and always talk to your doctor.

I had laser surgery done right in the Dr. office as my insurance would not pay for it at the hospital. I was not numb. It did not hurt just slight cramping during procedure, nor did I have any cramps afterwards. I went for paps every 3 months and did not make it through to the 2nd pap and had to have colposcopy and laser surgery again. This was in 1994 and I have never had it again. I faithfully get my paps once a year!

i too had atypical or precancerous cells on my cervix about 14 years ago. after the colposcopy, they did laser my cervix and I had to have follow up paps for every six months for two years. I never had another problem. sometimes your cerivx can get bruised from deep penetration during intercourse. that can cause some cell issues. you should be fine. and they use plenty of anethesia.
