okay I just decided to come back and add some details. His family is Vietnamese for starters. Secondly, I always take my shoes off in my own home so I make extra sure to do that in his family's home. I always say the yes ma'ams and yes sirs and I never disrespect them in any way. They would however like to see him with an asian girl and I think that they are just upset because he doesn't want to be with an asian girl. We have been together for a little over a year now and things haven't changed all that much. His parents are first generation too, just to let you know. So if I'm in school working my way up to a pretty high degree plus am very respectful to them, why can't they see past the fact that I'm white?

It seems that you have described my situation perfectly so I really understand where you are coming from. I live more of an asian culture like life than anything else and my boyfriends parents still don't really even know that I exsist. Well, at least that's the way that it feels sometimes. Sometimes they are nicer to me than other times. I just really try to keep quiet around them so that I don't accidently say anything wrong. I'm very polite and always offer to help around the house and such. I think this is just one of those things that really takes alot of time to work itself out. I mean I just think to myself that if I don't go away then they will have no choice but to love me lol. Hang in there.

Maybe you could clarify what you mean by "isn't as nice as they could be". Is it because they'd prefer he date an Asian girl? Is it because something happened lately? Is it something cultural?
Are his family members first generation Asian? or are they second or third generation?

If they're less acculturated to Western culture I would suggest getting to know their cultural values more and learning about the value of respecting elders. Education is also a big thing too. Food for thought..

How attached is he to his family? Does he acknowledges the fact that they are being not nice and tries to reverse the adverse effect by being just that bit more supportive of you? Does he stand up for you when the family get out of order? If he does then go ahead and continue your relationship with him, because he is an independent person. If not, then respectfully break it off. Feel free to e-mail if you want more situation related discussion. Regards!

heh.. I happen to be an asian girl who is dating a white guy. heh.

Well anyways, Asians are BIG on respect and manners. Japanese households usually have the rule of removing shoes out side the house, using please and thank you, giving gifted goods such as chocolates, and sneeze away from where you eat.

Don't worry, Asians tend to judge people easily. As soon as they know you, they'll warm up.

I'm guessing you are an American. How would you expect them to behave when they find their son is dating a lady from a country that contributed to the 5 million of their people killed.
My suggestion is always refer to the conflict as a "war" and not "police action" or whatever the term is.
I think you should ask them how they feel about Americans.

Be yourself, but be polite to them. If his parents both came from Asian countries, they are probably used to polite people. And remember, it's impossible to please everyone.
