I had severe food poisoning over a year ago, and had to go to the emergency room. I vomited about 15 times and had bloody diarrhea. The emergency room doctor wanted to do a rectal exam. Why? I let the doctor do it because I was so out of it I didn't care. My fiance stayed in the room, so nothing inappropriate went on. What is the purpose of that for food poisoning? Is it something to do with the bloody diarrhea?

To clarify, the diarrhea was not bloody. When I went potty, it was pure blood coming out. Mmmm... I know it's gross. I was pretty scared.

When you have "food poisoning" it is important to identify
the bacteria that caused the problem, reason being, you
can severely pass this organism to another person and
get them very sick, which is the case of some Hepatitis A
cases, salmonella, shigella and others...These diseases can be transmitted from person to person.
Whenever this happens, you are a Public Health hazard and
by state regulations, your case, if positive, must be reported
to the Health Dept. authorities...
Doctors frequently insert a long Q-tip to obtain a sample from
your rectum and send it to the lab to identify the organism.
That's how the culture is taken.
In my opinion, you were seen by a good doctor who suspected
that you were been affected by a gastroenteritis condition
and he needed to take that culture.
So to clear any misunderstanding on the subject matter,
he wasn't been fresh, or inappropriate by performing this test,
he was doing what a doctor is supposed to be doing
when a patient shows up in ER with bloody diarrhea...
The bloody diarrhea comes from the organism irritating
your bowels.......

The doctor wants to determine where the blood is coming from. You could well have internal hemrrhoids that have become inflammed and bleed from the diarrhea, or have a small tear. Without the rectal exam he has no way to know, and afterwards he can test the stool for occult blood. That is blood from higher up that can't be easily seen. It's a miserable exam at that point in your life, but yes, it's sensible and sometimes needed.

He had to rule out other things. The symptoms you had could have been other things. A rectal exam is completely normal. He needed to determine if the blood was caused by internal hemorrhoids or if it was something else. I'm guessing he also took a stool sample to rule out C-Diff. I know it wasn't fun, but just wait till you have a baby and you see all the other areas they examine!
