Why "fork over" means pay?

It could also have something to do with bringing money home and working being called "bringing home the bacon" and you use a fork to eat so if you were going to pay someone else money you would "fork over" some of your "bacon"...

could mean to "hand" over something. as in using your hand. But in this case you "fork" over something when giving, since you use a fork to carry something (food) hope I'am making sense.
