Is it possible that because I was recovering from the surgery, I was more susceptible to getting a cold sore? I remember the last time I got a cold sore was a day after I had food poisoning. Is it normal to get them after something wears you down?

The cold sore virus lives in your nervous system all the time. Generally, your immune system does a good job of keeping the virus down so the cold sores don't break out. However, whenever your immune system has something else to do (like fight off food poisoning) the virus might come out.

Yes you might be more prone to get a cold sore if your immune system is run down. Be sure you take a good mulitvitamin and a good antioxidant supplement daily to keep your immune system healthy. Also remember to wash your hands anytime they are near your face and don't share eating or drinking utensils while the cold sore is active.

Yes. Now don't get scared but cold sores are a form of herpes...not the genital kind...but of the same family. Being that they are a form of herpes, they tend to surface after being in a stressful state such as surgery, illness, etc. Unfortunately, you're one of those people who carries the virus and will probably always get them when situations such as the above occur. If you have a family doctor who is pretty cool, usually they can call you in a prescription for an anti-viral such as Zovirax that will help clear up your cold sore in no time.

"Cold sores", or Herpes Simplex 3, can pop up due to extreme stress. In this case, from your operation. They will eventually dry up and go away. This is normal, just go with the flow. There are some over the counter medications that could expedite the process but may sting. Good luck!
