First, as 60 is getting to where I can see it, I take issue with your defining 60 as elderly.
No matter the age, people need something to do. If you have the finances and an avocation that equates to a job, fine. But staying active and focused as health will allow is the route to a better outlook on life and improved health and longevity.

well first I don't think of a person as elderly until they are 70. A 60 year old should work as long as he wants to and is able to.

My great-grandmother is 92, and she still drives to meet her daughter every day for coffee. She stretches in the mornings, and cooks meals for my family all the time. Just because someone ages, doesn't make give them the inability to live the rest of their lives. As long as someone still enjoys their daily life, even if they are growing older, they should still be allowed to live it.

well my grandfather is 70 currently and works six days a week in construction (he does outside architectural works and oversight mostly nowadays though, since his cancer and slight lag in health habits). i really recommend working, but taking and having fun, because work gives a direction for elderly and more organization to their lives.

If you have good assets and have the money to retire, it's whatever you fell like. If you don't have enough retirement money, keep working.

If they want to and are capable, I say let them work as long as they want.
