Wow, I can totally relate to your problem... I have some pretty bad dreams myself! I had one the other night.. it was so scary, and I woke up at 5:30 in the morning just to get out of the dream!
That is what I do most of the time, I force myself to wake up, and sometimes it's only after it's gotten worse! I wondered how I could get through the previous parts without waking up... but when I do wake up, I usually get up quickly, to try to chase the memory of the bad dream away! It works most of the time... There was an old saying once upon a time about what to do about nightmares... "take a bale of hay to bed with you to feed them!" ;0) Seriously though, I have found out that the most frequent nightmares are from when I am eating close to bedtime!
It's mostly sweets too... so I have had to cut back on those darn things and not eat so late at night. I have also found that when I wake up from a nightmare, I am usually on my back... and I hate that... So I try really hard to stay on my side, or my stomach! I know it's not like I can control it when I'm sleeping.. but I do try!
The meds are supposed to help you relax and sleep, but there is a potential for addiction to some types of sleep inducing drugs!
Work with your Dr. and see what is best and safe for you ok! I have alot of empathy for you, I have been through this for years!
Good luck... and as one good person already said, Prayer helps!

I'm sorry your having nightmares. Sometimes I am actually able to control my dreams...if I think of something before I go to sleep, like my Dad who passed away 5 years ago, and I think good thoughts and memories about him...I will have a peaceful night. Try to examine things that are going on in your everyday life also. I had a dream/nightmare 3 nights ago that me and my 15 year old son were facing each other and I looked down and that's when I realized he had stabbed me in my abdomen. I know that a knife, in the dream world, means words and he has been really popping off with his mouth lately. Examine them though, write them down, but most of all, go to bed knowing that you CAN control them. Good luck sweetie.

Besides functioning as an escape for our daily lives, whether you believe it or not, dreams sometimes do reflect our daily lives, esp. things that you worry/fear most. If you can still remember your dreams after you wake up, write them down and examine them. Look back the things that are going on in your everyday life, try to make meanings out of your dreams. It may help you solve/overcome problems in your lives. Sometimes, dreams are a way of communication between you and your inner self.

Eg. Feelings of sadness (for closed ones passed away): Think of the happy moments when you were with him/her and good things about this person.

If none of these works, then it is time to time for you to see a professional Psychologist.

ok well maybe there is something you are subcontiously afraid of. it would be very hard to figure it out. what i would do is write them down and see if maybe there is a pattern with them like theres the same guy being mean or your in the same place. like a bad dream diary. and maybe cutting out tv for a couple of days i know you said your not watching scary movies but there is bad stuff on the news even. i use to have really bad dreams when i was younger and i stopped watching the news and still dont watch it to day i get my weather info and stuff off the net.

Your dreams are trying to tell you something. They may seem weird an scary, but they have a message for you FROM a deeper place in your mind. Pay attention to the content of the dream and ask yourself how that relates to what's happening in your life. Nightmares go away when people address the issues that they are trying to avoid.

1. switch doctors. 2. see a physiologist. If you are suffering from nightmares, there's a very good reason. Most likely, you have a repressed memory you are trying to deal with. Seeing a licensed psychologist (not just a regular po-dunk therapist) will help you on your path to healing.

I have been seeing a psychologist for over a year now and I am a better person for it.

This might sound really stupid but just try sleeping on youre back face up! I'm not going to tell u how this works but if it donsent work then when u wake up (if u wake up) just remember that its just a dream; its not real. Or bend youre dreams so that way ur the spotlight, that that ur "superman" in the dream or something (lol). And lastly, youre dreams manily reflect what happened that day or day b4.

This is what I usually do. There's two ways in doing it. First, you drink a cup of hot milk and a nice warm shower. Second, stay at night until you get tired and sleep. Those are the two things that I usually do (I usually do the second one, but I recommend first one)

try taking up meditation before sleeping at night. It's so calming- i used to be a cynic, but i suffered from insomnia for a few months and my doctor recommended medtation because I also didn't want to take meds. Trust me, it's so effective! I fall asleep faster, and don't wake up at odd hours anymore. Also, I find that sex (or masturbation) helps in making you want to sleep, so give that a try.
