Generally speaking when you walk into a tattoo shop for the first time they might say to you "Can I help you with anything?" and you'll probably say "Not right now...I just looking around" and then they might reply "Well if you have any questions please feel free to ask". When you see something that you might like to have, you can discuss the price of what you want, the design, how long will it take to do (in-case you had something else planned that day) and then the best time for you two to get together to have it put on. When you go get to have one put on he'll ask you where you want it on and depending on where you want it...he might have to shave that area to get the hair off and that's so the needle don't push the hair into your skin to get it infected. After she/he does that then then they'll clean that area with most likely an alcohol pad. After that is done she/he will rub a deodorant stick on your arm so a stencil will stick to it. The stencil is just an outline of the tattoo he is putting on you, then while he's waiting for it to dry she/he will most likely get the colors of the ink that she/he will be using, fine tune the tattoo gun, set the needles...etc. After that your ready to be tattooed. While she/he is tattooing the outline she/he will have a rag or towel wiping off the excessive ink on your arm, and plus it helps the artist see where he is tattooing better. From start to finish...she or he will be changing needles and colors (depending on the size and if your having other colors put in). After your done she/he will clean off the tattoo, put an ointment on it and cover it with a patch and the reason for that is that it's considered an open womb and don't want it to get infected. He will let you know how to take care of it and many shops will give you a sheet of paper on how to take care of it. After about 5+ days it will get itchy, but don't scratch or pick at it...cause if you do you could make it bleed and there will be a light or white spot there. Depending on how fast you heal the tattoo scab will come off and that looks like when a sunburn starts to peel and it might have some color in it, but don't get paraniod...it's only the scab coming off and completely normal!!! I also might add too...that 9 out of 10 the artist will want to get paid in advance.

when you have chosen your tattoo, the tattooist puts a print of it on your body and shows you to make sure its in the correct place, this is just like a sticker doesn't hurt, nothing to pull off so no change of it hurting. Then when your sure its correct they start with the outline in black, the noise is worse than the feeling (depending on where your having it done) I found that my back hurt lots more than my arm. when the outline is done its time for some colour and if you faint they can get it done without you even knowing lol. they aren't a nice experience but are addictive.

you pick a picture that you want from their book or bring them one of your own, they make a stensile of it and make sure of proper placement, wash the skin, shave the area where the tattoo is going, place the stancile, and start your tattoo. When they are done they will put something on the tattoo and cover it.
Best bet is to use Tattoo Goo on your new tattoo. it works the best and doesn't irritate the skin.
Hope this helps and good luck.

It depends on where the tat is. Mostly, they just start on the tat. After you have decided what you are getting, they will work on it.
Depending on what you are getting it may sting a little. not bad though. Boney areas seem to be more painful.

First- they remove a portion of your brain. The part that is logical and performs reasoning functions.
Then they stick you with an ink gun that put's a little needle into your skin and injects color.
