She is 6 years old and slightly overweight. She will even urinate while I am sitting right there. She isn't bleeding alot but she is always dirty on her back side and leaves stains everywhere she sits. I have to constantly clean her back there. The vet doesn't know why she is bleeding and assumes it is coming from her vagina. I don't know what to do. We have been keeping her in the bathroom so that she doesn't urinate or bleed anywhere but I can't keep her that way forever. I don't want to get rid of her but don't know what to do!!!!????

The vet did a urinalysis. There were crystals in her urine and some blood. The vet put her on an antibiotic. He noticed some inflamation back there as well so he had her on prednisone. The blood isn't pooring or dripping out of her. It is more of an ooze, brownish blood.

Hi Mel...I would have to join the consensus in perhaps considering another veterinary opinion. If you live in a major metropolitan city consider locating a feline-only veterinarian as they specialize in feline-only diseases.

Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine of Feline Health: http://www.vet.cornell.edu/fhc/brochures/Housesoiling.html

Feline Lower Urinary Tract Infections: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_feline_lower_urinary_tract_dis.html

[edit] did the vet mention anything about feline idiopathic cystitis? http://www.petplace.com/cats/feline-idiopathic-cystitis-fic/page1.aspx perhaps consider an ultrasound?

Okay I am confused...you claimed the vet did not know what was going on, then you say the cat went to the vet and was medicated! So, which is it ...the vet does or does not know what is wrong. If he prescribed antibiotics then it is obviously an infection. Blood in urine usually indicates that. If the cat is on meds it should be cleared up in a couple weeks. If not, take the cat to another vet for a better diagnosis.

Take her to a different vet. The cat should be kept overnight or even for a few days at the cat hospital or clinic to be watched and examined in more detail.

You need another vet. I agree it is usually best to find one that specializes in a specific type of animal. My vet's license plate reads, "Kitty DR".

You may find this hard to believe, but vets can have preferences too. Some are good to have to vaccinations, spaying/neutering, the regular stuff. When it gets complicated, you need someone who is a specialist not a generalist.

If you had a heart problem, you wouldn't expect an orthopedist to treat it, would you? Not trying to be sarcastic, just trying to put it into terms that humans can relate to.

I really hope your kitty can get better soon.

I would find a vet who specializes in cats or treats only felines. No offense to your regular vet, but treating cats, dogs, iguanas, birds and turtles ... something's bound to be missed, I think. So, in a situation like this, I'd go for a specialist.

Mel--maybe a second opinion is necessary... usually blood in urine is an indication of a feline lower tract infection. See the following webpage: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_feline_lower_urinary_tract_dis.html

Don't get rid of the cat.

Get rid of the incompetent veterinarian.

Take your cat to another vet and have it diagnosed properly. This may not be cheap.

If you are not able to spend the money to diagnose or treat your cat, surrender it to a rescue that will get it proper care.

you need to take this cat to another vet today...she is probably bleeding from the vagina and it could be for a number of reasons, none of them good. don't get rid of your cat....get her some medical help before it is too late.

Good Grief, you need to get yourself a different vet. It could be something as simple as an urinary tract infection but I would take her for a second opinion
