I think that if someone truly believes that an evergreen tree in your house decorated is ONLY for "believers", then they are truly close minded. Who says it has to be called a Christmas Tree?
Walmart!
The Christmas Holiday has traveled Soooooooooo Far away from religion over the years. I am an atheist and I have ALWAYS had a tree, of course if I didnt have kids, I would NOT have one! Not because of my faith, but because it is a Pain in the but!!
Some people may feel that Christmas is only for Christians, and others that do not believe should not benefit in the holiday season. They should work and be miserable. Typical......

I don't know if you want a legitimate answer or not. Sure, Atheists can celebrate Christmas just for fun. My estranged mom in an Atheist and she always gets a tree and likes to buy gifts. But the true meaning behind it is completely gone unless one believes that Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. You don't even have to be a Christian to see the logic in that. I mean, look at the word "Christ Mas." The Santa Clause stuff came later from the legend of St. Nicholas in Germany, and I think that was where the idea for the Christmas Tree originated anyway. So I don't think the tree has anything to do with being a Christian. But it is very ironic that non-Christians go around celebrating a holiday that began for religious reasons. It seems almost hipocritical, doesn't it?

Tradition. A Christmas tree has nothing to do with the birth of Christ. I'm an atheist and I will put up a tree and lights, etc. but I won't put up a nativity scene. I celebrate Christmas to be with friends and family. That's all.

It is easy to celebrate Christmas without bringing religion into it. All you need is Santa Clause, some elves, a few reindeer, a snow man... etc. Christmas could just be something about bringing family together. The excitement of kids opening up presents on Christmas tree morning. The holiday has been overshadowed by all of the marketing anyway.

The 'Christmas Tree' portion of the holiday has little, if anything to do with the birth of Jesus or the Christian faith. It's more of a seasonal tradition, and perhaps fun thing to do. Perhaps a better question is --- why wouldn't an Atheist put up a christmas tree?

Mainly because I want to. I like the smell of a fresh cut tree. It makes the little ones happy. My partner and I are both Satanists, and in no way associate the day with the birth of anyone. The whole concept of Christmas today has become blasphemous in itself anyway. Retail chains are pushing their supplies even before Halloween. It's all quite commercial. As an added bonus, I especially like the way my inverted pentagram looks atop the tree. Happy X-mas!

The christmas tree like the holiday itself is based on pagan celebrations. The reason non christians put up trees and decorations has to do with the cultural aspects of christmas not religious. Many Americans who are not christian celebrate the holiday, just like many non hindus celebrate diwali in India.

Well for starters a Christmas Tree has nothing to do with the Birth of Christ!! Its a holiday thing much like Santa Clause. Is it wrong for Christians to teach there kids about a false idol named Santa?? NO!! Its all for fun and the joy of the holiday. They put one up for the same reason that Christians put out Easter Baskets that's what you do..What do Easter Baskets and a Giant Bunny have to do with the rebirth of Christ...Nothing!! Quit being so cynical and enjoy the holidays...

Since Atheist are ones who don't believe in God, why wouldn't they put up a Christmas tree? Christmas is a Pagan origin. Pagans were non believers of God. Getting the picture now? I for one do not celebrate Christmas or any holiday that originates from Paganism. It displeases God. Try reading Exodus 32:4-10, about what God disproves of. You can change a name for a festival, but to God it has the same meaning. Christmas, or the Christmas tree has nothing to do with Jesus.

Because Christmas has become a holiday to party. Whether Christian or other wise many people celebrate the holiday or parts of the holiday to their choosing. The tree is a festive center piece for any celebration this time of year.
