Yes it can be, depending on the situation.
Knowledge is a fire when...
...it "burns" a person on the inside so much they must share it with others.
...it "burns" because other refuse to hear.
...it can spread like wild fire.
...it lights up the path of truth for someone to follow
...it burns away falsehood and lies and leaves only that which is right, true and pure.

Most assuredly yes. In the Greek myths Prometheus gave knowledge to mankind in the form of fire. I could also be argued that knowledge is the spark, the fire that has fueled some of humanities greatest achievements. Wisdom is the light of experience that guides us every day. It has been portrayed as a torch for enlightenment as on the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. Richard Dawkins in his recent book "The God Delusion" says that every town has its torch, the teacher and its extinguisher the clergyman. Dawkins is a self proclaimed atheist. Remember that fire was humankind's first source of artificial light.

Physical, actual fire? Uh, no.

But it can serve nicely as a metaphor for knowledge.

Or, if you're looking for an elemental correspondence for knowledge, that would be Air.
