I used to live on a farm and we had several outdoor cats. There was one large tomcat who would regularly mount and hump other boy cats. Can't cats smell the difference between boys and girls? The boy cats often didn't fight back and just laid there. What's the deal with that?

Just a side note, I was a child when I had this cat, therefore I was not able to get the cat fixed. My parents did not fix any of the cats.

Hi there...even spayed/neutered cats do this to exert their dominance over other cats regardless of gender. Some people have witnessed a smaller animal mounting another who is larger in size to establish the dominant behaviour.

I have seen a lot of this at the shelter where I work - males humping males, females humping females, males humping females and vice versa, even one male cat who had a favorite stuffed toy! (Ew!) (all these cats were altered btw) Personally, I don't think it is necessarily a dominance thing and as long as they get along well, which they seem to from your description, certainly nothing to be worried about. Although it can be very embarrassing when you have company or have to explain it to a small child : o

That is dominance behavior, the big cat is letting the other cats know he is the alpha cat or the cat in charge and when they do nothing they are accepting his dominance. its not necessarily about
sex and mating.

Unaltered male cats are nasty!!! They spray & they will even rape a spayed female. They fight & get abcesses & are great at spreading feline leukemia & feline aids. 99.99% of people not smart enough to have their male cats neutered also do not have them vaccinated. Same with female cats, that is why there are so many in shelters & so many more that are euthanized every year.....
