Hey everyone, my friend Jessica and I were just talking about our church that we go to and about the different headcoverings that women wear. Some wear a hat, others a bonnet, Jessica and I and some others wear what as known as a snood which covers our long hair. There are also women who wear a veiling over their hair and also there is two women who wear a veil over their head. Our church is against women wearing a female kippot or doily. Jessica and I wear these also sometimes when we are praying at home. Well, this lady came up to us in the assembly and said that we needed to cover our face as well. My husband says that as long as we cover our hair we are okay, but if we wanted to wear a complete veil we could. What should we do?

This question you are asking can bring division between you and those around you. My personal belief is that you do not need to wear a head covering at all. The head coverings in the old testament was because of the angels of God look at women (Genesis 6) and lusted after them. In the new testament Paul told the church which was located by a temple that was full of prostitution and the coverings were to keep the ladies of that church from being mistaken as prostitutes themselves. I would follow the standard set by you husband and those in authority at the church you attend, things will be allot more peacefull for you if you do.

This is an age old custom of a practice of Modesty. Muslim women cover for the same reason.. God tells us to like he does in all the 3 major religions..
So to answer your question.. What would you think on your upper body would need to be covered to protect your decency and modesty.. Look at all the old photos of Christian women, Mary etc.. They wore scarves like shawls that covered both their hair and draped down over their shoulders to cover their bussoms. .. But in Christian churches now, its more of a symbolizm and not practiced fully.. I see some women just wearing tiny scarf covering their hair... Nuns cover completely...
What do you feel is a decent covering?...

Keep in mind that when St. Paul talked about head coverings he wasn't instituting doctrine. He says, "Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?" (1 Corinthians 11:13)

You should wear a complete veil, especially when you are letting your father examine your breasts and when you are breastfeeding your 12 year old son. Remember - modesty is very important for a young lady!

i am not sure of the Christian theology on face covering or full veils..... but i just want you to know i am very proud of you. i am a Muslim but my family is Christian and i've done extensive study on veiling in the three monotheistic faiths. i am glad to see that veiling has not been lost by all Christian women. as a Muslim woman who covers i know that it is something that truly empowers a woman. i know this must be a struggle since not all Christian women cover and you will receive criticism even from your own. but i do applaud you and inshallah(God-willing) you will be rewarded for your dedication and faith
peace to all,
Sakina
