He recently quit using drugs after 20 years, only two weeks ago.Meth. Could this be a result of coming down? He tells me he has dreams of someone hitting, or attacking him.

Yes. It falls under the same condition as Restless Leg Syndrome...which is a condition that causes people to suddenly twitch or jerk a part of their body while in a relaxed state, usually while asleep. It's usually accompanied by sleep apnea which is a condition in which the person stops breathing during deep sleep. Many times their arm or leg will jerk violent...I believe as an attempt to wake the person up so they will begin to breathe again. One of the biggest signs of sleep apnea is a very loud, resounding snoring that can literally sound like the person is struggling to breathe. If any of these signs or conditions accompany your boyfriend's hitting you during sleep, then you should really have him checked by a doctor who will or should order a sleep study on him to find out what the problem is because if he does have sleep apnea along with the restless syndrome, it should be dealt with immediately as people have actually died from from untreated sleep apnea.

Let's play 2 - Ernie Banks The pitcher has got only a ball. I've got a bat. So the percentage of weapons is in my favor and I let the fellow with the ball do the fretting. -- Hank Aaron If a woman has to choose between catching a fly ball and saving an infant's life, she will choose to save the infant's life without even considering if there are men on base. ~ Dave Barry

I hear people have sex with their partners in their sleep. So I haven't heard about/experienced this before, but I wouldn't be too quick to judge. There is a good chance it's legit, especially if it is out of character for him.

I had a bf do the same. He tried to choke me, and was really sorry when he woke up. I requested that he seek help before I would spend the night again. Long story short, we broke up anyway because he had some other things to work through, but it does happen.

My husband sleepwalks when he is stressed out about work or something. He does all kinds of stuff but he never hit me. I thought he might a few times when I tried to stop him from doing things like pouring soda on our bed or lighting a lighter. In his dream he was at work & he thought one of the guys he works with was taking away his tools, I stopped & so did he, but it scared me. You should be careful!

Nightmares are common with patients who suffer PTSD, or Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. And hitting your spouse while you are asleep is a common reason for them to seek a separate bedroom in these cases. We can move and "fight back" when we are having nightmares, so he is probably dreaming that he is trying to hit those people after him back when he is hitting you.

i have slapped someone a few times the same night in my sleep. i woke up as soon as i hit her. my husband "wakes up" and looks for stuff in the bed and carries on a conversation. he remembers nothing the next day, so now i laugh it off. is your boyfriend under more stress. things like that usually occur more when people are sleep deprived or under increased stress.

It could a withdrawal effect or unresolved conflicts leading a person to "act out" in his dreams.

He could discuss his dreams with a therapist if it persists. In the meantime, maybe it is safer for you not to sleep with him.

I hit my bf also in my dreams. In my dreams he was really annoying me. In fact, this happens in real life but I never brought it up, hence it appears I have "relieving" my anger in my dreams
