My relatives might come over for christmas break from december 20 to january 5th from calgary ab canada and we live in phoenix arizona usa. Since they are 5 people and tickets would cost them over $2000 for all, i can book them a flight within usa using my southwest airlines miles, but they have to cross the border and come to spokane Washington which is 450 miles from calgary, since southwest airlines only flies from there and it is closest to them. We figure cost to be around $300. Is it possible to drive in decmeber, january in that area, coming from calgary ab, crossing the border at Idaho, then 2 hours drive west to spokane? what are the road conditions(i know snow will be there, but is it usually clear or not)? The whole trip will take them 450 miles or around 8 hours or so. And lastly, does a train or bus travel between calgary and spokane?

+ I just heard of someone doing something similar. They had a clear trip one way and big problems getting back. They finally just stayed at a motel until the next day and the roads were clear. If your relatives have an extra day for that kind of opportunity then they probably can do it.

The drive that time of year is NOT fun, as the passes change day to day and need more than 8 hours for that trip.

Greyhound bus does go from Calgary to Spokane but takes 1 day and 5 hours. You will have very tired people on your hands as there are so many stops...

Also, you need to figure in hotel rooms in your $ 300.00 figure
as most likely would never make the flight connection on time...

i would call West Jet Airline/ or use the net...WestJet Airline..

Just checked and flight 902 leaves Calgary at 11am arrives in
Phoenix at 13:58

Costs $ 228.88

You can book it from where you are with credit card...my sister always does.

Better idea ??

Enjoy your family and have a Great Christmas......

i lived in creston and know the area very well. the roads will be clear and easy to drive on...it is a busy border crossing station. taking the bus is crazy it will take hours practically days!! my sister has taken the bus all over bc...and to california...we do not recommend it.

its an easy drive...really...

btw...your relatives should know that all roads are clear in north countries!!

have fun!!

It sounds like a big hassle.
Can't you use your miles on the Delta route going North from Salt Lake City - there is a commuter airline that flies that route.

It depends totally on the weather. The roads are good and they are well maintained. A snowstorm can come anytime but you usually have a couple of days warning from the weatherman so it should not be a problem for you.
