There are many different sizes and shapes of burrs. The number and size of the cutting edges vary. There are also grinding discs and cylinders, cones, etc. These can be corundum, aluminum oxide or even diamond.

By law each patient gets a sterilized hand piece and new burrs.
And I would insist on new burrs. The used ones can harbor bits and pieces of someone else's teeth or bone! Do not let them be re-used on you!

I am not sure which question you were asking, but these answers should take care of it.

some burs are single use only and should and must be thrown away. burs that are not single use only are are autoclaved after every patient. just as they would the instruments. with health regulations now and health inspectors - why would you want to put your patients and staff at risk

DRILL BITS ARE STERILIZED AFTER EVERY PATIENT. SOME ARE JUST THROWN OUT DEPENDING ON HOW MUCH THEY'VE BEEN USED.
REST ASSURED, EVERY TIME A DRILL BIT IS USED IT'S EITHER BRAND-NEW OR IT HAS BEEN STERILIZED.
