No reason a family practice doc cannot treat and prescribe for this condition. Take EXACTLY what he prescribed, don't mess around with it. Family practice docs deal with this all the time. Have been on synthroid over 30 years and never seen an endocrinologist about it...and I know some! If you have concerns, discuss them with your doc before seeking another consult. Are you having some specific problem? Is this newly diagnosed? It is not rare, endocriologists are not routinely consulted unless there is a specific problem in managing the condition. You should have a TSH test once a year to determine correct dosage, or sooner if you have problems. Pharmacies will not refill a prescription for synthroid for more than 30 tabs for 12 months in a row. They require a new prescription, and that requires a doctor visit. Best to you.

Better see an endocrinologist. Dosage changes as you continue treatment and you may need lower dose now.

It all depends on the patient. There's no sure does for everyone. As long as your doc can get your blood levels okay, there's no reason to see a specialist. Many family docs care for patients with this on their own.
