My cousin has a cat and he said that if the cat stays in all the time, never gets out (they have a baby gate and everything to prevent him from getting out) and there are no other cats, the cat won't spray to mark his territory, because there are no other cats. But I say that the cat will, because it is just there nature. Who is right?

I should probably add that the cat has yet to reach puberty

HI Emily...if the cat isn't neutered hormones will induce spraying, which is inevitable. Urine spraying is a normal, innate territory marking behaviour which has nothing to do with a cat's sanitation even if there's no presence of other cats. In fact they prefer the scent of their own urine as awful as this may sound.
Here are some web articles on spraying:

Yes, the cat WILL spray. Even females do it! They have such a keen sense of smell, they will spray to mark their territory against the strange smells you bring in on yours clothes and shoes.
They will also spray (sometimes extra hard) at the doors and windows, in order to attract cats of the opposite sex.
The only way to prevent spraying is by neutering or spaying the pet.

More than likely the cat will spray as part of nature. The only way to get him to not start is to get him fixed ASAP. I got my male cat fixed when he was 6 mo and he's 7 yo now and he's never sprayed.

Eventually, that cat is going to be sexually mature and he will show her who is right.
It is unusual for cats under a year to spray, unless they are feeling crowded, threatened, or can catch the scent of a female in heat. Given the distance that cats are able to smell, no baby gate is going to interfere with the scent of a female in heat wafting in on the breeze.
She might be safe for now, but she's going to be sorry someday. I like my cats big, so I usually wait until they are about a year to have them neutered, but I wouldn't wait too much longer than that.

Yes he will spray urine to mark his territory and at a younger age that people might think! She should get him neutered as soon as she can before he starts a bad habit.
