Golf is truly not eevryone's knd of game, golf are played by people who could afford to hire caddie, rent to play on golf courses and hardly shed a sweat under umbrellas and get to ride on golf cars.and an extra added glamourous status and enormous big prize money.

Hello sportsbuff

Yes golf is a sport, a number of pro athletes play golf and for sure all of them ride in carts rather then walk. I personally say its a contact sport, WHY, (because if you do not make good contact on the clubhead you cannot play well) :):)

Caddies are not needed and the cost of a game of golf is not that bad anymore and if you join a golf club then the more you play the cheaper it gets.

As far as the prize money goes for the pros I think that may be a little out of hand for sure, but its now all a part of the game. I think most prize money in most sports is out of control.

Yes, in my opinion golf is a sport. Whilst it may be true that most amateur golfers play for relaxation and fun, in the professional golfing world and amongst top amateurs the true 'sport' of golf is seen.

These dedicated players wake up before the sun rises to practice, not only the thousands of balls hit each day to train and ingrain the swing, but also weight-work in the gym for the strength to hit the ball vast distances, and cardio exercises for fitness - you must remeber over the course of a four round tournament the golfer will cover upwards of thirty kilometres.

Whilst this should seem enough to justify classifying golf as a sport, it should be made known that the golf swing, and the eventual impact between the club and ball, is one of the most athletic manouvres in all of sport. The swing, something that no man or woman has quite mastered, is a incredible display of atheticism; the flexibility and strength required to swing the club of speeds of 100-130 miles per hour is something not any unfit, untrained person can do. And the fact that the game can be played by the shortest and tallest, the fattest or slimest individuals means the swing does not come one-size fits all. It is unique.

The actual impact is even more incredible (yes, I've said that a few times but it's the truth). If, as the player swings the club in an unnatural tilted circle around his body at 120mph and turns his body (remembering to keep his head steady, his torso back with the hips pulling against them) and arms, the clubhead is not approaching the ball from a near-straight path and the clubface is open or shut by more than 3 degrees the ball will veer violently from its intended path.

And yeah, when the professional golfer isn't playing in a tournament he's training 6-8hrs a day.

Wow, I sure do talk a lot. I do play golf and it is a sport. Hope this answers your question!

Darn it! All these years I've been doing it wrong! I have never used a caddy, umbrellas can be a pain in the rear (maybe because I don't have a caddy?) and the only time I've ever ridden in a golf cart on a golf course was during a tournament when it started to lightning (officials came out to give us lifts to the shelters).

As for pro golf, yeah, the purses are pretty hefty sometimes, but what about those folks who don't win? They had travel expenses, course fees, etc. and they don't get a dime. Whereas a professional basketball/football/baseball player gets paid even when they're benched all year. So it's a trade off in my opinion.

Your watching too much TV. Local golf courses rarely have caddies, you have the option to walk or ride. You also have the option to carry your bag, or use a pull-cart. This IS a sport, but it's not as high impact as many others. In order to play as well as the big boys (Tiger, Ernie, Vijay, etc.), you need to be in tip top condition, you also have to be mentally strong and sound. to walk 18 holes even without carrying your bag is a 5-6 mile walk. with your bag slung over your shoulder, seems like twice as long sometimes. The reason it seems to be such an "easy" sport is that it's low impact. But, believe me, if you swing improperly or too hard and your not in good shape you could ruin muscles in a heartbeat.

Any sport is played by a select few. Golf isn't only played in a golf cart. I play very competitvely and we had to walk and carry our clubs for 18 and sometimes 36 holes in one day. you are looking a golf course of 18 holes is on average 8-10 miles long and carrying 75-100lbs on back can take a toll on the body. For a person to say it isn't a sport is cause they don't play it and see how difficult it is. Golf by far is one of the few sports that is hard to be good at.

I play golf and YES IT IS A SPORT!!!
umm.. no most people do not have caddies.

Without a caddie, its actually REALLY hard to walk the full 18 holes because you are carrying your whole bag w/ around 13 clubs which is extremely heavy for about 4 straight hours...

Also... it takes a lot of skill and concentration (?) to do well.

Its not as easy as it looks.

Most people that play golf don't have a caddy. Pro golfers do have a caddy, but do not ride in carts. Most pros also take several extra shirts with them and discreetly change between holes (typically the 9th and 10th, sometimes others).

I am sure a golfer has said this, but here is my 2 cents worth
Come out to play golf with me I am 43 and ALWAYS walk, never ride, I live in NC and play in the summer in 90plus and 80% plus humidity, carrying a bag with 14 clubs, balls, etc. Come walk 9 holes and see if you last... I will take any football, basketball, tennis and hockey player, plus any jogger put a 30 lb bag over there shoulder and see how they do!!

Yes. Where I play there are no caddies and the junior rate for me is $6. The normal rate is about $43. Not that bad.

Golf is not a sport in the true sense. Golf is a competition. There is a slight difference.
