I recently got a pound mutt, and it's not completely potty trained... I live in a mountainy area, so I don't want to let him free outside and get all sorts of ticks and fleas. It won't go pee when I take him outside.. He's only 17 lb, so he doesn't eat that much. He's already pooed twice in the house and peed once. I don't know what to do. The only time he pooed was when I took him to a grassy field at the local school and church. What do I do?? Why won't he eliminate outside my house? Should I get the scented house training pads?

A change in living environment can cause setbacks in training. Depending on how long you've had the dog it may take him a while to get used to a routine. He's still quite young and training can take up to a year for some dogs.
Get scented training pads and give the dog his own area for when you're not home -either a crate or a metal excercise pen. You can also get a spray that gives off an ammonia smell that can attract the dog to go on the pads. Let the dog out frequently and give lots of praise.

Clean the mess up in the house thoroughly. If using paper towels take them outside and leave them in the area you want the dog to use. Once they have used the spot a couple of times you can discard the toweling. Remember to have patience, the pup has been a cage and doesn't really know whats expected yet. Until he's trained don't give him the run of the house. Scented pads may or may not work for you. I've found newspaper works just as well and is less expensive.

You need to crate train this dog. Get a crate not much larger than the dog and keep him in it when you sleep, when you are not home and when you are unavailable to watch him. As soon as you take the dog out of the crate take him outside to do his business. When he finishes eating or playing take him outside. If you are watching him and he starts to have an accident tell him "no potty outside" as you are taking him outside to do his business. If you are supposed to be watching him and do not see him have accident unfortunately there is nothing you can do about it. Do not yell at the dog. Make reprimands firmly without yelling. Do not hit the dog or stick his nose in his mistake. This is the best way to potty train your dog. Good Luck.

My Dad tried breeding Basenjis. Same thing happened. Has the dog had it's shots? Cause if it pooped after it went to the school, there are tons of germs there! It's like crawl all over puppies there for germs. We tried using pee pads, and now they go on them perfect! They are now fully potty trained! Good luck!

yes the scented pads may work. take him out every 15 minutes and 10 minutes after eating and if he goes PRAISE, PRAISE PRAISE.
when he goes again in the house wipe it up with a paper towel and then rub it in a spot outside your house - this may work
Just keep at it - he will come around

A dog is like a child you have to retrain the dog you might have to take the dog to a behavioral trainer. The trainer will also teach you to be able to train your dog.
