Actually, to build muscle mass, you really need more energy in the form of carbohydrates, preferrably complex carbohydrates. When you stress the muscles, using energy, then new cells are built. However, just adding protein does not build muscles.

So, as a low consumer of meat, you will find plenty of protein in milk, cheese, egg, dried beans and peas (cooked), and nuts. There is also protein in other vegetable foods like breads, pasta, other grains, and vegetables.

I would recommend that you enjoy eating and working out, but do not take extra protein pills. Please do not become engrossed in excess exercise at your age. You still have some growing to do, and you do not want to stunt any of your growth.

The protein pills you are referring to would be BCAAs (branch-chain amino acids). While they are totally safe for everyone from children to elderly folks (as they are just broken-down protein), they are not necessary for you. I'd suggest a good whey protein isolate powder.

I give whey protein to my 15 month old, my 5 year old, my 9 year old, my Wife, my Grandma, and all my clients. To say it's not safe is to say that milk is not safe (as that's all it is, milk minus the fat and other non-protein elements). Get a good, cheap brand as there is little difference between the expensive ones except the price.

Country Life makes a few excellent ones:
-Essential Natural Whey (a mix of whey and casein, and my personal favorite).
-Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey (a good whey isolate at a good price, usually $15-$18 for 2 lbs).
-BioChem (a little more money, but more natural, if your into that sort of thing).

Those are all good ones. You should have about 20-25 grams per serving at least (about 1 scoop). Take some 45 minutes before your workout, and take another shot right after with some good carbohydrates. Just go easy on the lifting, you've got lots of years ahead of you, make sure you don' t hurt yourself by getting over-zelous now. Focus on develping rock-solid technique now, you can work on lifting heavy later.

Obviously, protein alone will not get you there. A good overall nutrition plan is in order. Lots of fruits and veggies, lean protein, healthy fats, and complex carbs. I'm over-simplifying it here, but you're young, do some research and you'll learn how to do it. You've got to eat to grow!

To gain muscle, you also have to eat enough calories from both carbohydrates and protein. NOT just protein. Protein pills are not suggested and probably a waste of money anyway, when protein is found in so many foods. If you're a novice weight lifter, go for 1.6 to 1.7 grams protein per kilogram of body weight. You don't really need more than that. And resistance/weight training is also key. Without enough energy (calories) you won't be able to have enough fuel for workouts nor have enough to build muscles.

GNC liquid protein is a good product but I would suggest researching foods high in protein that you may like ex.tuna & many other fish, nuts, peanut butter, eggs. Also if youre looking to build muscle make sure you are drinking plenty of water. Good Luck

You should not depend on pills or any supplements for you needs. Eat properly and you will get what you need. Supplements can be and are harmful to the body.

There is not good substitute for good food.
