I used to think so but according to my hubby who is a Registered Nurse, the alcohol just makes the germs slide off a surface easier it does not actually kill the bacteria. Evidently bacertia can actually grow in alcohol! UGH!

RE:
Does hard liquor kill germs?
You sometimes see people sharing a bottle of hard liquor. Is this because the alcohol kills all the germs and so therefore it is safe to share the same bottle?

Hard liqueur (I.e 40% or more) would instantly kill and virus and bacteria it comes in contact. You would be completely fine @Ryan Even if there was herpes on the mouth piece of a bottle of water it would be killed by the natural digestive system and immune system. Which is why herpes is transmitted almost always via sex. So there is no worry even if it was a water bottle. Stomach acid is some pretty serious stuff.

80 proof (40% alcohol ) and higher have antiseptic qualities, but if you want to kill all the germs, try either Everclear, or Kentucky Moonshine, both are almost 100% alcohol
the reason for the sharing is probably because its cheaper to buy 1 pint bottle than 2 half pint bottles

simple thinking people make me smile. Betty white at 92 years old, drinking daily and is as lively as ever. cigarette kills people. Sure extremely impaired drivers are at risk but the ones that are responsible live long vibrant lives. Ive know so many people that have never drank a drop of alcohol in their entire life and passed out due to cancer and viruses, while their are people that socially drink that live too 100. Live a little

Big Fat NEGATIVE, although high proofs of alcohol can kill bacteria, the mouth flourishes with thousands of bacterial colonies. The type of alcohol that we drink is not strong enough to eradicate the bacteria, and even if it was, the amount of bacteria on the bottle would be too great for adequate eradication.

no need to fear germs, the alcohol takes care of that for you. your only danger is drinking too much and waking up on your lawn missing your left shoe and half your shirt lol.

Funny, hard liquor is a product made by a process called "fermentation" - also known as "rotting vegetables".
