The old testament is a type or shadow of the new testament. God wanted to write His law on the peoples heart but they rejected Him so He gave them the 10 commandments. They chose not to have the intimate relationship that He wanted to have with them. He sent Jesus to reconcile and abolish the "law" and all of the traditions now we have that personal relationship with Him. The old testament shows the laws of God and the new testament shows the grace of God. We still need both and should study both as they are pertinent to each other and God can give revelation through both testaments.

I would agree with SONGNDANCE,,,(Romans 15:4) For all the things that were written aforetime were written for our instruction, that through our endurance and through the comfort from the Scriptures we might have hope.
The whole Bible is aimed at proving that Almighty God, Jehovah [Exodus 6;3] has the sovereign [ legal] right to direct our lives. And that when Adam and Eve sinned [ disobeyed] the penalty was for them to [eventually] die. We have inherited this problem...At the moment we all eventually die.
Prior to them sinning, God had no plan for them to die. HE therefore had planned for them to live forever.
Adam, as a perfect man, lost us that benefit. Jesus, also as a perfect man, bought [ paid for] us to get it back. Which will come into effect after Armageddon. [(Revelation 21:4) And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”
Jehovah God, because he loves us, has given his only son to us for this purpose.
While all this is going on, Satan[ who caused Adam and Eve to sin] is being dealt with. The prophecy at Genesis 3;15 pits animosity between Satan and his Followers and Jesus and his followers. Jesus received a 'heel' wound from Satan[ non fatal..he died but was resurrected] and Satan WILL receive a 'head' wound [fatal] from Jesus.
(Revelation 20:10) And the Devil who was misleading them was hurled into the lake of fire and sulphur, where both the wild beast and the false prophet [already were]; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
For Satan to be rendered 'impotent' unable to do anything...ever...would be torment.
This is different from Satan's 'abyssing' for a thousand years. This is only a temporary measure from which he,Satan, will be released...for a little while...
(Revelation 20:3) And he hurled him into the abyss and shut [it] and sealed [it] over him, that he might not mislead the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After these things he must be let loose for a little while.
The complete Bible is a book letting us know what will be. The overall picture is clear.
The final outcome for us is found at ;
(Psalm 37:9) For evildoers themselves will be cut off, But those hoping in Jehovah are the ones that will possess the earth.
(Psalm 37:11) But the meek ones themselves will possess the earth, And they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace.
(Psalm 37:29) The righteous themselves will possess the earth, And they will reside forever upon it.
...with no death or sickness...

Galatians 3:24-25
Wherefore the law ( the old testament) was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
But after that faith is come, we are NO longer under a schoolmaster.
Galatians 3: 19-29 will explain further.

History and the prophesies of the Messiah.
It is used for teaching as well. How pagan beliefs slowly but surely came to believe in One God.
It contains the 10 Commandments and the chronological history of where Jesus (as the human side) came from.
Proverbs is a good example of teaching.
One of the best books to explain the coming of Jesus (The Messiah) is the Book of Isaiah. Handel's Messiah was taken from various books of Isaiah.

Friend - The Old Testament is our History, it contains the lineage of Jesus, and the prophecy as well as many, many beautiful poetry and songs. One could not understand the importance of Jesus birth, life, and death without the background given to us by the Old Testament. GB

It's the story of the Israelites and their relationship with God, and the moral/ethical code of the time using typical examples of the day. Without it, there would have been anarchy -- just as today we have anarchy without the enforcement of laws.
It is sometimes contradictory because laws change with the times, just as they do to this very day.

To prophecy about Christ. The New Testament is "hidden" in the Old. For instance, the removal of original sin through baptism has its precusor as the symbollic flood which cleansed the world.

To represent part of Biblical history and it does contain important information that helps link both that part of the Bible with the New Testament.
That's how Christians and Jews are related to each other....spiritually speaking.

Prophecy's for the coming Messiah. To let us know that there was hope for salvation. To know that he was indeed the Son of God. The OT is there for our benefit. It has a lot of useful information.
