Petsmart has free potty training classes. I would definitely take advantage of that.

I would definitely look up crate training. That will help immensely. Such a young puppy is not going to be able to hold it for very long. You are going to have to take the dog outside hourly. Until it is about 5-6 months old, it is not going to have the necessary bladder control to keep it from going inside. After that time, dogs are only able to hold it for a max of about 8 hours. Puppies that young are probably going to sleep a lot until they grow up a little more as well.

When you take it outside to eliminate, always go to the same spot. Feed your dog at scheduled times and then be ready to take the dog out after about an hour. Whenever he does go outside, PRAISE YOUR DOG! Have a freaking party and give him a small treat. Dogs want to please and when he knows he is doing the right thing he will want to do it.

Get your dog fixed when it is old enough as it helps limit the need to mark territory. When he is in the house do not leave him unsupervised and only allow him in areas he is going to be supervised. If he does go in the house, you can't get mad at him, it will only hurt his training, he will simply learn to do it where you can't see it, and it is your fault you didn't get him out soon enough. There are many pet scent eliminators and you should buy one while training your puppy.

Google dog training, talk to a local trainer, and get yourself educated.

Put him on a feeding/watering schedule and crate train him! When I adopted my Italian Greyhound puppy it only took him 2 weeks to figure out the whole "go outside to piddle" routine. And a lot of people told me that an IG will never be fully housebroken, especially the males, because they are sneaky and sometimes too stupid to remember things but I proved them wrong. He always knows what to do! Good luck with your dog!

papertraining, worked for me, praise him when he goes o nthe paper, and dont do anything if he pees anywhere else unless you catch him in the act, them gently pick him up (while he is still going) and put him on the paper, and tell him go potty. or take him outside every couple of hours and tell him to go potty and praise him when he does, and if he goes potty inside, and you catch him in the ace then take him outside and if he goes outside then praise him. the key is praise, not punishment. i have two chihuahua's, i should know. he will get into a routine in 2 weeks-3months, depending on hew fast he learns, and his personality.

if you are going to paper train him you can actually buy a spray that smells like poo on the paper. However, if you want to teach him to go outside the same meathod can be used in an area in the grass. Also try to crate train him, dogs have a instinct not to soil where the sleep.

And I like Gir for a name.

Yes you can change the name. Crate training works the best for housebreaking. Every dog varies on how quickly they learn. Just remember if you're a patient and good teacher it shouldn't take long.

I was lucky, mine came trained. Someday (probably not for another 10-15 years, because 2 is enough for the travlin lifestyle!) I'll be on here asking the same question. But, if you're adopting, it will probably already be trained...

for a small dog crate training is a good idea....but with it being a chiwawa you will have to make sure you keep him warm in the cold weather...depending on where you live....for the most part ....dogs wont poop where they sleep...it takes time to train them....my advice is start him on a schedule and keep to it....they are like kids on that part....good luck...and yep ya can change your dogs name...

It takes a good year for the dog to develop it's urinary track....therefore you need one year for him not to piddle or pee....then it should all stop is trained right....good luck!
