There are questions that get asked that are misunderstood and are responded to in an unexpected way.

Indeed, there are some questions that are stupid in the way they are asked.

That's why it is important to think carefully what you want to know and present it with as many facts as you can give in order for the poster to make a rational response.

As long as it's really a question, and not somebody's ideology wrapped up in a question (similar to the "why are all of the _____ of the world so stupid), which is just trying to force your own ideas on others.

No -- it is absolutely right. A question may seem stupid or obvious to some, but that does not make it so for all readers. So, ask away.

Maybe the trick is just phrasing it in a way so that it doesn't seem stupid. That way people are liable to take you more seriously and give an honest answer.

I agree with mage. But asking a question is a search for knowledge from outside-of-your-house sources that you have never met.
