cat's usually don't like the smell of citrus. i've also heard tell about the fact that they also don't like cinnamon. but if your cat seems unfased, get a spray bottle and spray her. the cat will eventually freak out at the sight of it. then leave it behind the tree.

Sit by the xmas tree and wait until the cat comes to the tree. Have a squirt bottle in hand. And Once the cat comes to play with the tree squirt her several times. Helps my cat stay off the curtains. Your cat will probably get scared from the sound the squirt bottle makes. And I don't think you cat will like the water either. Squirt her and strictly say NO! After a few times you do that she won't want to come to the tree. At least my cat isn't going to the curtains. I dont think your cat will be going to go to the tree.
Good Luck!
And Happy Holidays!! ;)

From surfing around I've found these ideas:
Sprinkle white pepper around the base of the tree - cats hate it.
Try lining the tree's lower trunk with aluminum foil. Some cats hate the sound and feel of it and won't try to climb up with the foil there.
Another trick may be to keep a pot of ryegrass or catnip near the tree to act as a diversion.
Cats may respond to loud noises or the popular method of spraying water at them when they begin to attack the tree, but we've found that their little cat brains forget this message pretty quickly, and they're soon back to cause trouble again.
Finally, there's a product called ssscat that uses motion detectors and a water sprayer to spray cats when they come too close to the tree.

The only thing I have found that helps is spray them with water in a water bottle. I have 7 cats in the house so I know exactly what you mean. My cats go after my tree all the time. Good luck.

We had to spray them with water. Squirt gun, spray bottle, etc. Cats and xmas trees can be a problem. Watch the lights, they sometime like to chew the bulbs.

Cat's don't like citrus and they don't like cayenne pepper. You could try spaying the lower branches with citrus oil, although if it's already decorated this might get messy. You could also try making a solution of cayenne, a litte dishsoap (makes it stick) and water and spraying the lower branches.
Be sure they aren't chewing and swallowing tinsel!
When I was a little girl we would string popcorn for the tree - the cats ate it all!
Good luck with it!

I found by hanging moth balls on the bottom branch of the tree that this solved our problem with the cat attacking the tree. Try it it might work for you. If not ask the pet store they have lots of ideas.

It's not their fault as you know. They are just being cats.
Put the tree outside and forget it this year.
If it's the ornaments, then remove them.
If you have a live tree then they are just feeling natural as to being outdoors.
Just adjust and cope, that is the minus of cats.

Let it fall on them... Worked for my cats lol.
But seriously, get a water bottle and spray them when they get anywhere near the tree.
