I have to agree with yugie29. mine went out, but it stuck in "open", so idle was around 2000rpm. $90 from napa.

I had a Datsun that did that, My 97 ranger does not.
However it sounds to me like the fuel in the line is enough to start then die. I guess the fuel filter is getting clogged. After you crank it a second time enough gas is passing thru the filter.
It sits under drivers side about 1/2 way back along the I beam. It is can type - around 10 -12 bucks at walmart. If you change it yourself, as you remove the hose at each end do not let the gas in the line drip on your face or clothes. Done that - been there.

The most common cause for this three second run then die problem would be a nearly plugged fuel filter. When the engine is allowed to settle, since the fuel system is always under pressure, even a minute flow through the filter would give you enough to start the engine, but not run it.
Shaking-up the sediment in the filter would also allow it to flow a small amount and run for a short while.
I would first change the filter. If that has been done then a FLOW,not pressure, test of the fuel pump would be in order.

If it has the 4.0 engine try and start it with your foot on the pedal if it will run while giving it gas it is your Idle air control valve guaranteed you can pull it off and clean it with throttle body cleaner it gets carbon built up in it use a qtip and cleaner don't forget my ten points

i own a repair shop,,in Tennessee, and the idle air control valve may be going out on it,this along with the temperature sensor will cause it o die like that until it warms up good, this it will run OK ,,usually they stick open causing the rpm,s to be too high, but in a few occasion's the, iac, valve will get clogged up,and will die especially when its cold, once it warms up it may not do this though,,but you may want to take it by auto zone ,and have them scan it for free they can tell you if it has any trouble codes in it,and that might help narrow it down for you,,good luck with it,i hope this help,s.

The Idle Air Control valve controls how much air enters the engine at startup and at idle. Try starting with your foot on the gas pedal and holding it down about an inch. If it starts normally when you slightly hold the gas pedal, then replace the idle air control valve.

You might want to try a gas additive, something that will clean out the carb/injectors, and fuel lines, you may have some build up. The best fuel additive I've found is Lucas gas treatment. The one place I can always find it is at Advanced Auto.

Auto zone will only be able to pull up codes if the check engine light is on. When does it do this? right after you fill up? cold mornings? After driving an hour and letting it sit? When it dies, will it start right up? Will it die again or stay running?
