Hi there...cats learn their names by associating hearing wit with something positive such as meal time, treats, and play time. Always say your kitty's name when calling him for each event so he begins to learn that his name means something wonderful is going to happen when he hears it called out to him.

Both my cats know their names, but we are constantly saying their names to them. When my younger cat, Buttons, was a kitten, I would play with him and say his name in a sing-song voice while I played with him. It's similar to how dogs learn their names--they just hear it when they're around and begin to figure out that word is associated to them.

I got a shelter cat that was named a name I didn't like, so I changed it. After a about 1 week she got it.
I said many times when I approached her, Hi Heidi, come Heidi, I love you Heidi, are you hungry Heidi and so on.
He or she will get it with repetition.

I had the same problem when I first got a puppy. We just expect it to know, and respond to, it's name - but it doesn;t work like that.
If you keep calling it the same name, and giving commands to it using it's name every time, it will get used to that fact that you call it 'tiddles' or whatever. In about a week it should respond to you calling his name.

Couldn't tell you. I've had my cat for 12 years and she still refuses to respond to her name, unless it suits her. Cats think they are gods and act accordingly. Just accept the fact that they're brats and enjoy their obedience and affection the rares times they choose to bestow it on you.

Call him constantly by that name: when you are calling to feed him; when you are petting him; everytime you want to get his attention. Cats are cluey... yor cat will learn quickly what his name is.
