I think a golden retriever would be a good choice. females are medium sized weighing 60-70lbs. Well, to me that's medium sized. The breed is very friendly by nature, but still should be socialized when young. If leash trained when young they will not pull. I live in an apartment with our golden (14 months). We take her to the dog park about 3-4 times a weeks, to get her energy out. She is very relaxed in the apartment, unless we get her excited, then She can play forever. the only negative part about Golden's is that they shed two times out of the year like crazy. Mine does not have the double coat, so she sheds a little less. I brush mine about once a week when she's shedding, then really don't bother after that. I don't really know much about Golden doodles (Golden+Poodle hybrid) but they are an alternative if you cant stand the shedding.

Any size of dog, except toy dogs can take you for a walk! Trust me, I walked a chiuaua/pug once that dragged me down the street; he was all muscle (and poorly trained).
Get an adult dog.. about a year or two or older. I adopted a 3 year old jack rusell/shitzu, he doesn't shed, drool, bark, growl, deficate, pee, or have any other undesirable trait. With an adult dog you can go visit it, it's temprement is pretty much set, and it has a history (unless its a stray, but most dogs are given up for adoption for "lack of time" on the owners part).
Take into consideration what I said. Mutts rule, and cross breeds too. Big dogs tend to drool (there's no way around that one). I'd check out a border collie, lab, beagle, samoyed.. whatever. Your options are open.
Search www.petfinder.org See what your local shelters have, instead of searching just by breed. Stop by, ask to take a couple you like for a walk, check their history etc. They'll be able to tell you right off the bat if the dogs a barker, snorer, drooler, whatever.
Adopt!

We have a black lab cross. He is social, loves people and children as we have grandchildren. Barks when there is a need for it. Protective if he needs to be, but mostly just a big lovable bear. Loves walking , swimming and chasing sticks; as well as chasing squirrels, turkeys, and chipmunks. Never catches them, but he sure tries! He is good indoors too. He is very intelligent and was easily trained. He is even tempered, doesn't drool, but does shed spring and fall. He is good with other dogs, doesn't start fights, but doesn't back down if the other dog gets nasty. Labs mostly range about 60-75 lbs though ours is large and weighs in at 110-120 lbs. He is a fun dog that returns our love tenfold.
The only thing with labs is that they are a dog that needs to exercise. We live in the country so that isn't a problem for us. If you have limited space and aren't near someplace that you can walk freely this breed may be a problem for you.
Somebody we know got a black lab that was rescued down South after hurricane Katrina. A female that weighed about 50 lbs. She is a lovely dog and well behaved; age 5 yrs.
This is only one breed to consider though. Like mentioned above, check out websites for the different breeds of dogs and match their characteristics with what you want; have fun looking for the perfect pet.
Good luck.

Dogs bark, and they growl, and they drool. All dogs will do that, if this is going to be a problem you shouldn't get a dog.
Despite this i would recommend:
Labradoors
German Short haired pointer
Border Collies
Kelpies (probably fit most of your criteria)
As for getting the dog to be good with other dogs, you need to expose them to other friendly dogs at an early age and regularly, but not just other dogs also people.

You'll get lots of personal opinions here, but really, you should research the breeds to determine what will be a good choice for you.
As for a big dog walking you... Consider persuing some obedience training with your new puppy/dog. A good trainer will help you learn how to teach your dog to walk properly on a lead without dragging you down the street.

Australian Cattle Dog also known as a Blue Heeler. Good medium sized loyal family dog. Not high on the barker/drooler scale. Medium to short coat so grooming will not be too difficult. They do need a bit of exercise or mental stimuli, they are used as herding dogs so they will need something to do. They're great at herding the kids!

Your perfect dog is the Golden Retriever. They are beautiful dogs and easy to train. They are medium sized and are on the top ten list for family dogs in the USA. Another good dog is the Labrador retriever. These are really the same as golden retrievers except they don't shed as much.

Do you have any ideas on what it is you are interested in? There are all kinds of breeds and mixed breeds to choose from. Have you been to your local shelter? Often times you can find your perfect dog at the shelter. My favorite breed is the Rottweiler but that is my choice, I did my research and have owned my own rottweilers to come to the conclusion it is the right breed for me.
I have a boxer and he is a great dog too, but I know from experience that the rottweiler breed is the right breed for me. You can always go to the local shelter, if you have a few breeds in mind, go to breed specific rescues, often times you have the opportunity to play with the breed and they often times have enough information to help you decide what breed will fit your lifestyle and likes.
Just go to google and search your breed rescue. I use Goodsearch.com because they donate a penny to my favorite rescue(north east rottweiler rescue) every time I use the search engine. If you have a few breeds in mind let me know and I can give you some more information on them to help you better choose what you are looking for! Good luck with your search!
