Good Question!
Personally, I don't believe everyone who dies goes to a "better place" - but that's what my religion (Islam) says about it. We believe that our life on this earth is a test, and that after we die, we will be held accountable for our actions.
Generally however, and to answer your question, it seems that it is easier for people to assume that everyone goes to a better place. It's *easier* to believe someone will be in comfort than in pain, and its *easier* to think that when you die, you will also be in a better place.

It's true, sometimes it might be better to remain silent. I prefer to concentrate my sympathies on the living. In any case, if a loved one of mine had just died, and I had doubts about where they had gone, it would not comfort me at all to have 50 people come and tell me "they are in a better place". It would really be rubbing salt in the wound. Just a hug and/or a word of solidarity would be more helpful in a case like that. Why bother trying to figure out where the deceased has gone?

Because it is very easy for us to state based upon the word of God that those who do not claim His Son as Savior will live eternally in torment. But when we are confronted with the actual death of a person the knowledge that this person may indeed be in torment right now is so shocking that we tend to repress this knowledge and water down what we know may be true. I have relatives who have died that I KNOW are in eternal torment as I speak. It is not comforting to think about their eternal situation.

It's a comforting thought for the mourning survivors. Christians like to think that their loved ones are saved.
Pagans (at least my brand) believe that we go to a place where we rest and reflect before embarking on our next spiritual lesson. That may or may not be a "better" place, but it's one more step in our growth.

Don`t be too mean with brothers/sisters or fellow citizens of God.
It is only God who knows everybody and their hearts, thoughts and spirit`s well being.
We can`t do anything else if somebody died, they are their own loved ones...so how about console them with your warm, loving words and your supports.
Later on when somebody dies in your family, they will do the same.
Be blessed!!!

Because a lot of people are so disheartened about being here that it's hard to imagine after leaving here that it would or could be worse. I'm one of those eternal optimists that believe it's better on the other side.

faith, the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen" (Heb. 11:1). It is synonymous with trust. It is a divine gift (Rom. 12:3) and comes by hearing the Word of God (Rom. 10:17). It is the means by which the grace of God is accounted to the believer who trusts in the work of Jesus on the cross (Eph. 2:8). Without faith it is impossible to please God (Heb. 11:6). It is by faith that we live our lives, "The righteous shall live by faith" (Hab. 2:4; Rom. 1:17).

It's meant to make the grieving survivors feel better. You couldn't say the ba*tard's rotting in hell now could you?
