In an effort to format my computer I have done something to it .. I had to go into the bios to change the boot drive to cd - that was ok .. When I put in the hp restore disk it asked a whole lot of questions re: fat32 or ntfs (I think this is where I started to go downhill..) So .. then the restore of the hp program says invalid c drive (sorry cant remember the exact error message) - so unable to format..

So .. in an attempt to boot normally - I now have a black screen that says "Error loading operating System"

OH MY GOD!

Any clues anyone??

Further ,, When I attempt to restore C drive it says "Unknown media type in drive C" - So .. what does that mean? - and more to the point - anyone know how to fix it?? I was going to format the machine anyway so the loss of data isnt a drama - but have I damaged it??

Thanks again ..

I have an HP pavillion 743. When my partition recovery would not work, I had to use the recovery CD's (6 cds). The CD's came with very clear instruction but still I had to try a few times before I was successful. So keep trying and dont give up. It can take quite awhile to install.
This site has clear and easy instructions to follows for installing windows on an HP computer.

Reinsert the cd and let it boot from it. When it asks you whether to format as fat32 or ntfs, choose ntfs. proceed from there with the rest of the setup. What happened the first time is that you probably already deleted the old partition, which is why when you try a normal boot up it's not finding your c: drive since the partition/format was not completed properly.

I'm so sorry about it. The message "Error loading operating System" means the OS on your HD is completely wiped out or corrupted, that's why not functional any more.
If restoring the OS from HP restore disk doesn't help, you'll have to install the OS on the HD from scratch.

I agree with rivermoon. The same thing happend to me when i was installing linux and i made some poor decesions regarding formatting the hard drive. I had to start from scratch and installed OS.

Stay calm.

It might be as simple as you left the BIOS thinking it should boot from the CD, but you have the CD out now.
