I don't know of many cities on the coastline, apart from Brighton, and as I live near there, and have done all my life, I'm not really a great fan. The beach is large pebbles, at least when the tide is in, the West Pier has been burned to a shell, but the Palace Pier isn't too bad. Shopping is good in Brighton, as is the nightlife, and there is plenty to do on the Marina Complex, including Sea Fishing, Boats and Ten Pin Bowling. You might just like the place, it depends on your age.

Other than that, I know cities that are something like ten to fifteen miles from the coast, but nothing else actually on the coastline.

Hope this helps. :-)

I've just come back from a weekend in Brighton and had a lovely time. The little alleyways in the 'Lanes' are great to stroll round with all sorts of weird and wonderful shops. The nightlife has something to offer everyone and the eateries are amazing. I ate at a cafe' style seafood restaurant for very little cash and had a superb meal. The hotel was good too.

if you want a fair mix of pretty scenery and nightlife, then brighton and surrounding areas would be your best bet, brighton for clubs etc. and lots of villages on the south downs for scenery, places like alfriston, jevington, and wilmington, plus the many good sized towns on the coast with accomodation to suit all pockets, from the humble B&B (bed and breakfast) to the 5star Grand hotels in Brighton and Eastbourne. Also about 40 miles east you will find Hastings the famed 1066 country.

It definately has to be Polperro in Cornwall!!! It is beautiful. You can get a cottage right on the sea front. The streets are all cobbled and the village is quaint and picturesque. Just key in 'Poleperro Cornwall' in your search engine and it will come up with a number of options for you to rent a place. The place is so popular that alot of accommodation is booked months in advance.

It's not a city but I'd recommend perrenporth in Cornwall. It's just right. Not to mental but has some nightlife and a lovely beach. It is however just down from fistral beach in newquay if you want a surfer beach, and not at all far from loads of different attractions, beaches both quiet and popular, quaint villages or decent nightlife. You choose.
