I spent way too much money that he'll never remember except for when he looks at the pic's & DVD!!! I rented a reception room, decorated in a theme of 'My 1st Birthday", bought from Birthday Express.com, we had 100 balloons, a bubble blowing machine, music, a picture CD of him growing up on a plasma tv. Let alone the sheet cake with his pic's & a 6" cake for him. He rode his 4 wheeler, opened gifts, danced & had a great time. The pic's are the best though!!

A tradition for us is to make a cupcake separate from the birthday cake that everyone else eats.
The cupcake is for baby. It's topped thick with icing and trimmings and goes well smeared on her face and in her hair! We just take off the paper under-cup and let her go at it!
Baby is draped in old clothes, a large bib, and has a tarp under her high-chair.

For my daughters 1st we had the party outside at my parents house, her birthday is in June so we had a toddler wading pool a small sprinkler, and my dad found a small blow up ball pit just her size at a flea market. We invited the family and a few of our closest friends. We decorated with ribbons and balloons. We did a simple theme, we found paper cups and bowls at the dollar store in butterflies, with pink, yellow, and purple on them. My mom made the cakes, 1 for us and 1 small one for my daughter. Their 1st birthday isn't something they will remember, or understand, but it' is a HUGE milestone for us. Have fun, and do something you know your child enjoys, and take LOTS of pictures. We did the water thing because she loves her pool, the tub, and water. I decided to put the money out for fancier parties when she has more input on what she wants. One huge thing was I scheduled it around her regular nap time, the party started in the afternoon, after her nap, and just in time for lunch.

Make sure you get one of the baby's first cakes (walmart and vons offer them free with the purchase of the big cake) this way they have their own special cake to eat and make a mess with. We did this for both our son's first birthdays and they loved it. We had a small party for each with lots of balloons and a jumper (they love to watch the kids fall down.) Oh yeah and if you have it somewhere other than your house bring a change of clothes for after the cake.

We had a family gathering at our house for dinner. I made that Magic Cake that doesn't use butter, milk or eggs. Surprisingly, it was quite good. In the morning, we went to our usual baby/mommy music group and I took pics of her with her baby peeps. For her little party she wore a new dress and tried cake and ice cream for the first time. Unfortunately she was coming down with her first cold too and was pretty fussy until she went to sleep. Let me know if you want that cake recipe.

WE had a butterfly/ winnie the pooh theme.. We stayed home and had close family over for cake and presents. ALso my favorite thing we did was make a video of all her firsts and let everyone watch it. The little ones played and everyone loved watching my daughters precious moments!

For my last sons 1st bday I got him a small (6") bday cake and carried him to Olan Mills to get his pics taken. I decorated the table that he sat on with balloons and a white cloth and I let him just go crazy. Those are the BEST pics ever taken and the studio even hung them up in our local office. Other than that I did the family thing...the memories sometimes fade but those pic last forever and OMG they are PRICELESS!

I stayed home...
Had a few guests...
Bought a big cake and a 3 inch cake (little cake for my daughters).
A few other party foods.
Game for the older kids.
Helped open presents.
I kept it simple. At 1 and 2 years old they still have no clue and are happy with just cake and present paper.
Just stay home and relax with a few family members.

I threw a small family party and made my son his own small cake.
I have unforgettable memories of my son going face first into the cake and him playing with the boxes his presents came in more than the presents!!!!
