I took a world religions class many years ago.. about 1984. An Islamic man came to talk, and he discussed things like "you don't sit down to eat until you know your neighbors are also fed," and many other kind and generous philosophies. What is it like for you to deal with the negatives in the media today that do not reflect the real philosophy of Islam? Or am I misguided?

I live in NYC. A lot changed after 9/11 obviously. Before no one bothered the muslims here. There were a few towel-head jokes but that was all. My husband is an arab muslim who actually worked in the W T C prior to the attack. He said he never had any problems with people regarding his ethnic background or religion. Our lives our very differant now. I hate leaving the house because of the stares and whispers I get for wearing hijab. My husband told me to stop wearing it after someone threw something out a car window at me. People are constantly shouting "terrorist!" at my husband when we go walking and people pass by in cars. So the discrimination is pretty bad.
There are so many misconceptions about Islam that I could spend all night here talking about them. If people want to know more about Islam- read the Quran or talk to real everyday muslims that are out side of your television sets.

what the man had told u is very true and a muslim manners play a big role in islam. if u cook something and ur neighbor smells it as in they like the smell, it is fard(obligatory) on u to give to ur neighbor what u have cooked. the list goes on. it is very hard for muslims in not only america but around the world to practice our faith and i think its just plain wrong. i think it would be nicer if people listen to our side of the story and learn and understand our religion before judging by what media says. if u have any other questions please feel free to email them to me and ill be more than happy to respond. take care and may allah help u and all of us inshallah(if allah wills). salaam(pe@ce). :)

it is because many in the west feel irrationaly threatened so they tell as many lies as they can to try and discredit islam and the Prophet Muhammad.
At the end of the day the negative media is causing people to pick up the Qur'an and read it themselves, and from this many are guided to the truth.
'Does not man see that We have created him from Nutfah (mixed male and female discharge semen drops). Yet behold! He (stands forth) as an open opponent.
And he puts forth for Us a parable, and forgets his own creation. He says: "Who will give life to these bones when they have rotted away and became dust?"
Say: (O Muhammad SAW) "He will give life to them Who created them for the first time! And He is the All-Knower of every creation!" (Qur'an 36:77-79)

Sounds like a neat little politically correct gloss over. How neat, thanks. I always appreciate experts who have studied Islam extensively offering conclusive view points about things they have studied in great depth. I mean, its not like you took a little ole world religion class and ranted off an ignorant lecture about something you havent even the first clue about.
Thanks again.
