My wife and I adopted a mellow beagle from a rescue agency two months ago. We love him very much and is a wonderful dog except we cannot get him 100% potty trained. We crate him and immediately take him outside in the morning and in the afternoon. However, he still marks indoors when he's out of our sight. We clean every time thoroughly with an enzyme cleaner, but he continues to mark new areas in the house. This happens only when he is just out of our sight and about 3-5 times a week. He is getting neutered tomorrow, but I'm not sure if that is supposed to help. What else can we do to fix this problem? He is otherwise our perfect dream dog.

I hope you are taking him out more than twice a day!

Neutering may or may not help. Get a couple belly bands and leave one on whenever he is uncrated inside. Once they learn that they will get wet with them on, they often they will not mark at all when wearing a belly band.

Get a baby gate and keep him with you so that you can watch him. If you do catch him in the act, holler, yell, and pretty much have a fit. No need to hit, this will be punishment enough, dogs hate it when their people freak out.

And remember, he IS a Hound, the least trainable of all the groups of dogs.

Neutering will help, although I have met a dog that still marks even after being neutered. My best advice is since you are using a crate, I would put a leash on your new pup while out of the crate. This way he is always attached to you or your wife. so when he decides he wants to potty in the house, you have a chance to correct it immediately. This way as soon as you notice him doing something you can run him outside and once he has done something outside then you can give a lot of praise for doing the right thing.

Another thing I would do is make sure you stay in touch with the rescue group, most groups keep information to help you on file. I am a volunteer with a rottie rescue group and we always keep great material easily accessible to everybody.

Good luck with your new pup, don't give up you will help him through this!

Neutering will help but don't expect an immediate change it takes some time after the surgery for the testosterone to get out of his system. Just make sure you have all his little messes properly cleaned up so he attracted back to them by the smell.

He is marking...this will be helped by having him neutered.

Make sure you take him out frequently. 2x a day is not enough to potty train him! Even if you are crate training!
