To be honest I have never heard of it being "taboo", it's considered not exactly good manners(especially if you don't excuse yourself) but people won't ostracize you from society or anything ridiculous like that. Your boss sounds like he has a problem to me.
My husband also suffers from heartburn and indigestion on occasion and he sucks on "Quickeez" lozenges, you can also get them in a chew from and they really help settle that nasty feeling down. You can buy them in supermarkets and most convenience stores.

Burping in Australia is extremely rude. I sympathise with your situation, however, you really should try anything to stop burping during meals. Have you tried qiuickeze - they usually work well. Or, move away from the table, and say excuse me after burping.
I have a friend that constantly burps while eating, it really does ruin the dining experience for others. I do not eat with her anymore as the constant burping (and smell from the burps) was starting to make me feel ill while eating.
Look at it as farting from your mouth - would you feel comfortable being out with someone and they let off a huge fart at the table?

It depends on how you were raised. I'm 6 months pregnant. I pretty much get away with everything, lol. But to take your question seriously, burping isn't "taboo". You have been polite about it and said "excuse me" each time.
If your boss still gives you a hard time, head to your local GP, and explain your situatio, grab a Doctor's Certificate explaining your condition. If your boss is still giving you a hard time afterwards, fax through a copy of the certificate as well as a formal harrassment complaint. This should shut him up, and possibly get that appology you deserve also.

Really, burping is quite a taboo anywhere. Try getting some Maalox or another heartburn medication for now or else go to the bathroom if you really really need to burp.

Yep. Let's little little bunny-rabbits too... and chinchillas. The same people that lament and wail about the disappearance of the horizon darkening herds of bison in north America cry about the climate changing existence of cattle. This is simultaneously hilarious and pathetic, but I'm sure those buffalo go pretty well right next to the mashed potatoes.

You SHOULD be embarrassed, humiliated and discriminated against. Were you raised in barn? Think about it.....you are expelling gas out of your body in a loud noise (kinda like farting except out your mouth). Your boss probably just told you it was unacceptable in Australia because he is grossed out by it. Get a pack of Tums or get your rude self away from the table until you can get your burping in check. I'm amazed someone needs to tell you this.

As far as I know it depends on the situation. Obviously if you're out somewhere rather fancy, you might try to diguise it. If you're around mates, generally saying 'Excuse Me' should be enough to cover yourself incase someone takes offence to it. I guess, it's mainly up to the type of people who you are around,. Making sure thay you do excuse yourself, and probably cover your mouth, might help to prevent yourself from upsetting others.
